  • So while the new wrinkles of Alignment present some fun twists on gameplay, and being able to become the Emperor yourself is another cool twist, it’s not going to be enough to bring you over if Total War isn’t your jam already. It’s more of the same with some changes throughout to keep it pretty fresh. If you enjoyed the main game and have an itch to come back, I recommend picking up Eight Princes if you were aiming to do another playthrough.

  • Total War: Three Kingdoms - Eight Princes feels familiar, although, sadly, also a repeat of what you've already gone through in the past. Although you can choose from eight princes, your overall experience (especially if you've put in hundreds of hours into the base game) would be more like a "7" instead.

  • All in all, Eight Princes is a surprisingly sizeable expansion, especially given CA’s penchant for releasing faction packs this close to release. It packs enough changes and new mechanics and feels novel enough for another playthrough, while keeping mechanics and the basics as feasibly close to the original as possible. If you can’t get enough of Three Kingdoms and just wants a bit more of almost the same, Eight Princes is the right expansion for you.

  • Overall then, the Eight Princes DLC feels like a solid addition. A new story, alignment system and gameplay tweaks provide enough new content for veterans of the main game. Continued emphasis on characters and their interactions makes Eight Princes feel part of the Three Kingdoms family. And the new separate Dynasty Mode provides a new refreshing change of pace, even if it is limited in its execution. It all comes together to deliver a welcome and wholesome package to fans of Three Kingdoms.

  • It’s a little disappointing that most of the princes feel like re-implementations of warlords from the base game, but with a foundation as strong as this it’s hard to complain too much. Creative Assembly clearly has ambitious plans for Total War: Three Kingdoms, and if Eight Princes is any indication we can expect great things going forward. Hopefully the team will be able to flex its creative muscles a bit more, though.

About the game

The year is 291 CE, and a generation has passed since the tumultuous events of the Three Kingdoms period began. Despite the tripartite division of power which brought the conflict to a stalemate, and the brief unification of the kingdoms under the Jin dynasty, civil war is no more than a heartbeat away.
