  • Overall, there’s a lot of things you can do with Total War: Rome Remastered. It’s a sandbox game that grants you the freedom to take the path you choose as you dominate the entire map. However, not every path that’s available is thrilling to get on. Some of them are tedious and frustrating, and some of them are engrossing.

  • Total War: Rome Remastered is a tough one. It’s dated, and despite being a simpler title not a gateway into the franchise. Three Kingdoms is the easiest entry for newcomers, Warhammer is king of variety, and Troy is the intriguing one. Then there’s Rome II which is the currently leading classic Total War experience. Rome Remastered is kinda…just there. I honestly wonder why it was even chosen to be remastered, I feel like we’d be having a totally different conversation if it was Medieval instead. Still it’s here, it’s fun, and it looks great. So if you’re looking to experience some classic classic Total War gameplay, then this is exactly what you’re looking for. Everyone else, there are better Total Wars available. For cheaper too.

  • All in all, if you're a Total War fan, especially someone who loved Rome: Total War back in the day, Total War: Rome Remastered is a fantastic way to jump back into the older game with some modern improvements. You'll have to get past some of the more archaic bits of the design, but the core experience: conquering the world and ushering your faction through Rome's civil war period is still so satisfying.

  • Rome: Total War is unaccommodating on modern hardware, so this remaster solves that issue with an improved and updated version of the original game. It might not stack up against its contemporaries, but Total War: Rome Remastered is the best way to play a series classic, warts and all.

  • Total War: Rome Remastered is a great remastering of one of the most influential and important strategy games in the history of gaming, though it is warts and all. Certain improvements are invaluable in bringing the original closer to modern sensibilities, though they only go so far, allowing issues like pathfinding to remain, as well as a dense-as-concrete AI, even though it has been improved.

  • Total War: Rome Remastered is a solid technical remaster of a classic game, but fails to legitimately improve and adapt for modern sensibilities.

Total War: Rome is still a stand-out strategy game, and this remaster makes it more fun to look at and easier to play. It's a little underwhelming to go back to for a series veteran when newer Total Wars have modernized the campaign design, UI, and AI opponents so significantly. But there's plenty of nostalgia to be had, and those pre-battle speeches can give me chills just like they did in ancient times.

  • A lovingly crafted refresh of a classic Total War game that manages to recapture both its triumphs and its tragedies.

  • Total War: Rome Remastered is undoubtedly a game of its time, and not some glorious return to the way strategy gaming is supposed to be. Simply put, having fun with Rome was, to me, much harder work than with Three Kingdoms or Warhammer. I still had fun though.

  • While I love the in-depth management of an empire, the modern games still offer a better experience, smoother and more polished. They're still the optimal places to don your armour, pick up a javelin, and make yet another barbarian child fatherless. It doesn't mean that I don't enjoy slaughtering the uncivilised heathens on the battlefield, but this is more for those that miss the gameplay of the original rather than new players.
