  • Overall, Timespinner is an absolute joy to play. There’s so much to love, with a compelling and mysterious story involving exploration. The interesting time mechanics, coupled with an amazing soundtrack and pixel art style, make this is a welcome addition to any Nintendo Switch library.

  • Timespinner is a wonderfully accessible and inclusive Metroidvania that does justice to the genre despite some missed opportunities and brief run time.

  • Whilst not quite on the same level as top-tier metroidvanias, fans of the concept will love Timespinner for all that it gets right. The game’s story remains interesting throughout, with gameplay that’s well paced, exciting, and consistently engaging, not to mention fairly open and deep. It’s a shame that its time manipulating mechanic isn’t put to better use, but that gripe, alongside a few niggling issues, does little to pull this adventure shy of being worthwhile.

  • Timespinner takes everything that works so well in 16-bit Metroidvania titles and adds its own twist. Through the theme of time control navigating the world, creating a second map, and plot are all enhanced. None of the additional themes and features do anything to detract from the classic Metroidvania experience. Lunar Ray games have built an intricate world and populated it with enjoyable characters and fun objectives.

  • Nostalgia is a powerful sentiment, and Timespinner’s theme of destroying a character's investment in the present in order to go back in time to fix things does resonate well with its '90s-rooted aesthetic. But for those with no connection with the era Timespinner apes, there’s not much here to love. I enjoyed it, but it was a mild and affectionate enjoyment, a pleasure born of its lavish art style and my familiarity with its beats.

  • I can’t deny the allure of the formula Timespinner is aping, and if its pixelated font and damage numbers give you nostalgic shivers, don’t hesitate to give it a shot. It doesn’t escape its genre trappings, but its combat, late-game exploration, and interesting plot make for a strong foundation that hooked me long enough for it to all come together.

  • Timespinner looks great, plays great, and feels like what a modern take on Metrovania should be, spiced up with some time manipulation mechanics that feel a bit underutilized in the grand scheme of things.

  • Aside from a few mishaps in dialogue, Timespinner distinguishes itself with an absorbing story with interesting underlying themes. It stands out with a refreshing time travelling spin on combat that reflects the diversity of the level designs. Exploration, sans the tiny map, is enjoyable, with the past and present boasting unique music and mechanics to keep things fresh. Overall, this solid adventure is a great use of your time.

  • It's not quite as deep as its inspiration and it won't take as long to finish, but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute I was playing. There's been no shortage of quality indie games inspired by Super Metroid and Castlevania recently, but in my opinion Timespinner stands out as one of the best. If you've ever enjoyed Symphony of the Night or one of the many games it's inspired over the last 20 years, you'll have a great time with Timespinner.

  • The experience was novel for all of its obvious nods and inspirations, and enhanced by its own original creativity and storytelling efforts. Timespinner will definitely take a place on the list of games I remember and recommend over the years, and I just wish I could play it on Vita.
