  • Thymesia’s combat is quite enjoyable and pretty satisfying, especially when you get your parries and claw attacks right. The lack of stamina is one of the biggest differences between Thymesia and soulsborne games, but that’s balanced by the fact that some enemies can’t be interrupted, nor staggered.

  • Thymesia is a solid Souls-like hack-and-slash action-RPG that delivers in most areas with a moderate degree of competence. However, in those few areas where it attempts to innovate, it never seems to fully find its footing.

  • Thymesia is a great Souls-like with its own unique twists and turns. The fighting mechanics are faster-paced than the combat in Dark Souls, but all in all, the game still remains a copy of the original and this remains noticeable throughout.

  • Thymesia is a game that has a story as complex as the pronunciation of the title itself. If a brutally tough game that puts your reflexes, memory and patience to the test like many Dark Souls-type games then there is some joy for you here. The combat is tricky to master but fast and fluid. If you are willing to commit yourself to the game and repetition doesn’t phase you then I would recommend you try this out.

  • Despite being a solid Bloodborne imitation, Thymesia carries over common issues in other Soulslikes. It's a great challenge for Bloodborne fans and offers the potential for exciting gameplay, but it weighs itself down with complicated and poorly implemented mechanics.

  • Thymesia embodies the ever-rising popularity of the Soulslike genre incredibly well. As an indie Soulslike, it knows it can’t necessarily be as big and as bold as its source material, but it also doesn’t want to simply be written off as a sub-par copy of something that’s already been done. And the end result is something kinda-sorta in-between of those two things.

  • All in all, Thymesia is a mixed bag, but it scores where it counts. The tactical combat is a fun mix of BloodBorne and Sekiro that stumbles in several places. It's not distinct in its appearance, and it doesn't do as well in level and boss designs compared to other games of its genre.

  • It has several mechanics for you to consider, slightly veering away from the style of combat that you may have gotten used to. Unfortunately, others aren’t particularly integral to core dynamics. Worse, when you factor in the rather short campaign length (i.e., less than 10 hours), the lack of enemy variety (i.e., samey-looking knights), and repetitive trudges through the same zones, it hardly scratches the itch for another Souls-like romp.

Thymesia’s solid kernel of an amnesiac plague warrior premise never pops into a worthwhile story. Its most creative locations and monsters are impressive, but they’re also sandwiched between mundanity. Even its best feature, the kinetic combat system, is satisfying only if you’re willing to narrow your playstyle to a relatively small window of options.

  • Thymesia does little to separate itself from its contemporaries. The gothic medieval aesthetic is one that’s found all over the subgenre and does nothing to push the aesthetic forward. Generic enemy designs, an unremarkable soundtrack and a vague storyline ultimately do little to give the game its own aesthetic identity.
