- It’s dark and moody; blacks and reds fill your screen, transporting you to some sort of ethereal nightmare. But you’ll likely be transfixed on the action, completely absorbed in Thumper‘s strange but fascinating world. There really is nothing else like it.
Kim Snaith · Feb 27, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Thumper: Pocket Edition is a unique 3D rhythm action game where we guide a chrome beetle along a track full of obstacles in a stunningly bizarre fever dream-like world.
SugarRigby · Mar 02, 2021 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - Thumper's visuals are stunningly beautiful. The game has some psychedelic graphics that feel incredibly futuristic, and everything is rendered in gorgeous 3D. Thumper's dark background is excellently contrasted by the bright and vivid neon lights of the track and sparks, and the space beetle is super shiny and glassy. Explosions are high-octane and fun to watch while being highly satisfying. Thumper runs at a smooth 60 frames per second, even on my iPhone 8 Plus, so there's zero lag.
Christine Chan · Jan 29, 2018 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - Thumper is very much not my kind of game. If it’s yours, fine, but I still wouldn’t necessarily recommend it on mobile. There are some control and technical issues that hold it back, even if you like what this game is trying to do.
Campbell Bird · Jan 26, 2018 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - On the outside, Thumper looks bizarre with its strange design and nightmarish visuals. But don’t let that fool you, Thumper has it where it counts. Behind the game lies an incredibly deep rhythm game that invigorates the genre and will push and punish you in equal measure. Pair that with extremely quick load times and a game that flawlessly runs at a smooth 60fps, and Thumper will be music to your ears.
John Whitehouse · Sep 01, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Thumper is the most hellish and intense rhythm-action game you or I will ever play. While it’s Xbox One port may lack some features available on other platforms—such as VR and portability—Thumper is still a fantastic and frightening game that's drenched in atmosphere and polished to the absolute max.
Lewis White · Aug 21, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Best in class, Thumper is an atmospheric and compelling addition to the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch, whose hellish drumbeat will pound in your memory for a long while. It’s that fearlessness to stand apart from what has long been expected in the genre that sees Drool succeed where others have faltered, and it won’t require spending too much time with the game for you to recognise why.
Alex Seedhouse · Aug 20, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It sounds odd to claim that a lack of consistently original music wouldn't be a major problem for a rhythm game, but music isn't the point. Thumper thrives due to the way it marries speed, simple controls, and mesmerizing atmosphere. It's far more convincing in VR, where you're enveloped in the game's space and free of distractions from the outside world, but it shouldn't be ignored by those without the appropriate hardware. Thumper, no matter how you play it, is too good to miss.
Peter Brown · May 18, 2017 Reviewed onRead full review - I would expect that it is a game many people who decide to buy it won’t ever finish just because at some point the bar feels just a bit too high. Regardless, if you like its aesthetics, its pounding beats, and a stiff challenge, there’s really nothing holding me back from recommending it whole-heartedly.
Justin Nation · May 18, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Everything that originally made Thumper a fantastic game is still here to be found in the Switch version. It’s incredibly fun and this time around can be played for both short bursts and long car rides. It’s a fantastic addition to the Switch’s growing library.
