  • There is some action and drama in Amid the Ruins, but a lot of the good stuff is kept towards the end. The stuff before it is all rather inconsequential, or not handled particularly well. There are even points later where story beats in the episode don’t quite add up, as the game turns an apparent choice into something of no real importance. It just doesn’t feel as tight or impactful as it should, even when the episode is running on all cylinders. It’s still enjoyable, but it’s by no means a stand out episode.

  • It is a lesson that Clementine has to learn in order to survive in this world; maybe it is one that we as the player must learn too. That said, decisions will come back to bite you in terms of what your fellow survivors think of you. If you support Luke’s decisions instead of Kenny’s, Kenny will make sure you know that he feels your loyalty is wavering and vice versa. There are still plenty of paths to take in Amid the Ruins, but having so many decisions lead to the same conclusion lessens the impact and makes the idea of moral choices seem a little pointless.

  • It’s not perfect, but it will do, much like a lot of the circumstances that face the survivors in the world of The Walking Dead.

  • The Walking Dead: Season 2 Episode 4 – Amid The Ruins hits the ground running after the previous episode’s massive cliffhanger. While the plot drags a little bit in the middle with some situations that feel like a bit of a retread, the dialogue remains in tiptop shape throughout. The episode is also probably the longest of the season thus far, so there is plenty of content to keep you occupied for the cheap price tag, especially if you bought the Season Pass.

  • Telltale Games’ unparalleled storytelling and character development remains as strong as ever here, and while this doesn’t quite finish on the note that we were perhaps expecting, it’s clear that there doesn’t appear to be any reprieve ahead for Clem and her group as we shuffle towards this season’s finale. Honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • I’ll accept and recommend this episode simply because it is a piece of something that I am already invested in, but really I just want to be done with The Walking Dead so that we can see what else Telltale’s got up their sleeve. Here’s hoping they finish on a high note.

Of course, fans of the series still need to pick this episode up, and from looking back at the entire season, this is still a decent addiction to an already great series. Just keep in mind, you can’t save everybody, and even if you try, don’t be surprised if someone dies anyway. This is The Walking Dead after all.

  • The episode closes out with the introduction of new characters and a brutal last-minute swerve that ends things on a major cliffhanger. With a final tragic revelation and a sudden jump to the credits, Amid The Ruins ends on a bang - quite literally - and keeps me on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next chapter.

  • From somber deaths to one satisfying slap, Amid the Ruins has a lot of memorable moments. As you approach the end, you're left in an unexpected place that keeps your head spinning. Telltale was smart to involve players in this final moment, forcing them to make a knee-jerk reaction to a complex situation.

  • Season Two of The Walking Dead Game still isn’t as good as the first season: the characters aren’t quite as interesting, the plot could be better, and there are moments which have a sense of repetition to them. But this is still one of episodic gaming’s finest shows, and Amid the Ruins is a great example of how it should be done, building tension throughout and following that up with an extremely strong final third, and some shocking final moments.

About the game

Free of their brutal captor, the group resumes their journey north. But hunger, violence and death have taken their toll. Simmering conflicts and inevitable changes within the group remind Clementine that danger can come from within, as well as without; she must choose her allies carefully in this penultimate episode of The Walking Dead Season 2.
