  • The variety of different heist locations keeps your mind engaged so you don’t fall into monotonous patterns of playing the same level over and over again. It also keeps the game fun and interesting turn after turn, rather than getting repetitive. The Swindle is a wonderful game with a lot of character and enough challenge to keep you engaged for 100 heists and more.

  • It’s a huge shame that The Swindle misses the mark so hard on its execution. The tools, upgrades, and challenges are all really fun to experiment with. There’s a great game somewhere within the mess, but you’ll probably stop having fun way before you manage to pull off the heist of a lifetime.

  • When it comes down to it, The Swindle is the perfect kind of game for the Nintendo Switch.  It never would have found a home in my PC library but I find myself picking up and playing it on the Switch quite frequently.  It's the exact kind of platformer that can thrive in the Switch ecosystem: easy to understand mechanics, difficult to beat in its entirety, but engaging gameplay that keeps you coming back out of pure enjoyment for every level played.

  • Overall, I enjoyed my time with The Swindle. While the random levels were a point of frustration, and the occasional frame rate drops maddening, the gameplay is solid and provides players with an interesting challenge in a wonderful setting. If you can get past its brutal challenge, you’ll find a rewarding experience, even if it can be an exhausting one.

The Swindle is a well produced rogue-like, with great style and clever mechanics. The controls are perfect and the 100 day limit creates a sense of urgency and focus. However, it’s not without its flaws, and there are lots of other similar games in the market at the moment. I don’t think this game is for those new to the genre, but if you’re a fan of rogue-likes and crave something super challenging, then you may just want to take a swipe at The Swindle.

  • If Size Five Games can release some updates to maybe tweak the level generation and at least make you able to always collect £100 on the first day, I think it would improve the overall experience drastically. Until they do, the score will stay as it is but don’t let that deter you if you enjoy other games like Spelunky or even Mark of the Ninja. If that’s the case then The Swindle could quite possibly be just the game for you.

  • It’s hard to fully recommend a game with inconsistent controls, but The Swindle is awfully close to being excellent. There are a huge number of enemies with different behaviors and the randomized level generator is more than happy to put multiple kinds together in ways that require different strategies to handle. The art style not only serves the game well, but also looks sharp when the camera zooms in during the hacking mini-game, revealing detail and linework that gets lost on the normal pulled-back view.

  • In the end The Swindle is an ambitious game that unfortunately just falls in at average. If you’re a die-hard fan of rogue-likes or if the premise sounds very interesting to you, it may be worth a purchase, as long as your expectations aren’t too high, otherwise it’s regrettably a game that can be passed over.

  • The Swindle is a game that many will end up playing for months to come. The gameplay is the perfect combination of stealth and action, and its difficulty, while brutal, is satisfying. Size Five Games, and publisher Curve Digital, have created an addictive game that needs to be played by anyone who loves a good challenge.

  • It's a festival of moments, of anecdotes filled with failures and smiles. I found myself holding my breath as I hacked a computer with just enough time to dodge three heavy guards coming my way, jumped over two electricity traps, clung to a wall to let a patrol pass, and bombed myself a new escape route. These pockets of perfection kept me hooked, and made me boot up The Swindle again and again in order to preserve this world of rogues.

About the game

The Swindle is a steampunk cybercrime caper about breaking into buildings, hacking their systems, stealing all their cash, and quickly running away again before the police show up. All the buildings you’ll be robbing are randomly-generated, so you’ll never get the same level twice.

Meanwhile, from the safety of your rickety airship up in Outer Space, you can modify your thief with new skills, tools, and all manner of advanced technological horrors, allowing you to take on bigger buildings with better security, for gargantuan rewards!
