  • All in all, The Surge 2 is a great game to pick up if you're looking for a more arcade-like take on the Dark Souls formula. It's a fun and engaging game with a solid combat system and enjoyable mechanics, and it's only dragged down by a mediocre story and lackluster environments. With the excellent improvements from The Surge to The Surge 2, the franchise is well on its way to standing tall in the Soulsborne genre. It's well worth playing if you're an aficionado of this genre and don't mind dying a few times.

  • The Surge 2 feels more like a heavy update for the original game with minor gameplay changes, new world and settings, and well-designed bosses. It still delivers an enjoyable hardcore experience, thanks to the balanced and smoothly working combat system, but you need to get along with a superficial story and dated graphics.

The Surge 2 has some really satisfying moments. It’s worth an investment based on the wealth of customisation options available, solid progression and genuinely fun combat. These innovations go some way to making up for the lack engrossing story or meaningful characters. However, the overriding sense is that the positive traits of Surge 2 often feel suffocated, mainly by a lack of visual and narrative investment in the world that surrounds its core mechanics.

  • The Surge 2 is a satisfyingly challenging game with fluid, fast and intense combat that rewards players investment. It’s not going to change the minds of Soulsborne detractors, but it’s got enough smart, unique features and interesting evolutions of the genre’s systems to put it on the radar of its fans. It’s far from a FromSoftware level game, but it’s a worthy alternative with a lot to offer.

  • The Surge 2 represented an opportunity for Deck 13 Interactive to put their stamp on a growing genre of video game. Undoubtedly, the game has some tremendous highs, the combat being the star of the show. Regrettably, its lacklustre story, campaign, and world hamper its ambitions and relegate it below the games it imitates.

  • Issues aside, The Surge 2 is a phenomenal improvement over its predecessor. It’s bigger, faster, a lot more ambitious, and above all, it’s a lot more fun to play. Thanks to its neat story, crazy setting, and fantastic combat mechanics, The Surge 2 is a great achievement by Deck13, looking less like “yet another Dark Souls clone” and more like a well-crafted action RPG that can easily stand on its own.

  • The first Surge was an immensely promising game that failed to live up to its potential. While it had some excellent ideas, it was short, frustrating, and repetitive. The Surge 2 is a step in the right direction, but it's a short one. Deck13 has worked hard to improve the combat, and for the most part, the studio has succeeded. Unfortunately, everything else - exploration, enemy design, and narrative - falls severely short of the mark. This isn't so much a surge forward as a lurch.

  • Deck13 included a number of new weapon and armor types, all of which can be upgraded extensively, again putting heavy weight on the act of grinding, which is a bit excessive, but thankfully it ends up being fun. If you like the idea of cobbling together armor sets earned by felling difficult foes, give The Surge 2 a try. You may get a bit lost in the world at times, but every encounter is fun and well thought out. The bosses in particular are nicely designed, exotic in look, and push you to play with brutal precision.

  • The Surge 2 has some marked improvements over its predecessor but doesn’t color too far outside the lines. It takes a formula that works well and continues using it in satisfying ways, just not in fresh or surprising ones. Still, that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s a hell of a lot of fun, and once it sinks its hooks into you it’s tough to pull away. The Surge 2 is absolutely a compelling entry into the souls-like genre, yet I can’t help but feel it’s missing an extra spark of creativity to make it a true game-changer.

  • The Surge 2 has great combat, but no areas stand out visually, a forgettable story, and the feeling that you've done all of this before makes Jericho City a place you'd want to visit, not live.

    About the game

The action of The Surge 2 is set in a dark universe in the convention of science fiction, in which people have significantly developed technology and started to rely more and more on machines. Unfortunately, creations do not always listen to their creators, sometimes leading to dramatic events.
