  • This mechanic is also skillfully used throughout the game when encountering different environmental obstacles, such as an electrical beam. The chiptune soundtrack is perfect at providing the feeling of a futuristic, almost dystopian Soviet Russia as you and fellow freedom fighters battle against the government. It helps to lay down the foundations for an immersive experience, and will stick in your head for hours after you’ve stopped playing the game.

  • The Sun at Night's missteps make for a more difficult time finding the things Minicore does so well. It seems proud to be a certain kind of game — the bears with lasers kind — but also achieves something subtler, something more difficult, with a universe so apart from the norm that I couldn't help but want to dive deeper. In building an intriguing alternate world, The Sun at Night charms, despite its flaws.

  • But there's little power to the bland gameplay or awkward, convoluted story. Laika is a tragic figure whose real-life fate is depressing, but the Laika of The Sun at Night doesn't make me feel anything at all.

  • The Sun at Night is billed as the first part in a three-part series. While this isn’t the most magnificent of starts, many of the issues I have with it can be fixed. The art and customization are really the game’s strong suits, so hopefully Minicore studios can bring the rest of the package up to the standard set by those elements. Regardless of my issues with The Sun at Night, I’m looking forward to continuing Laika’s journey.nt, though most are minor

About the game

The tide of Soviet power washing across the face of the Earth could possibly have been turned back at various stages of history. But the new energy sources they discovered lit a fire under the Russian war machine. So when Stalin rolled into Paris, the resulting flare-up of global conflict left little more than smoking ash heaps where America and Great Britain had been.
