  • The Silver Case is best enjoyed as an intriguing historical document: a statement of intent from a developer that would go on to bigger and better things. Removed from that context, however, it is difficult to recommend. An utterly glacial pace combined with often nonsensical dialogue means the experience is dull at best – and frustrating at worst.

  • The Silver Case remains one of the best ways to experience SUDA51’s quirky and avant-garde storytelling, although the gameplay just can’t compare. With such a timeless crime drama that still surprises newcomers, there’s plenty of story to dive into that can help players appreciate the likes of Killer 7 more. Now that a new patch has unlocked the two additional chapters to The Silver Case on PS4, players won’t have to wait any longer to experience this avant-garde story experience for themselves.

  • I have a hard time putting together what exactly happened in the The Silver Case, but it’s a testament to the writing, characters, and mood that I want to figure it out. Portions are often slow, dense, and overbearing. However, the relatable character moments, intriguing short stories, and strong visual style eventually won me over, even if I had to wade through some rough edges to get to them.

In the end, The Silver Case is a strange, but interesting title. I can’t really fault it too much for its design. This is a game from 1999 after all, but some of the dialog choices made and what could have been fixed a bit in a new translation could have helped the hokey exchanges from time to time.

  • If gamers can get past the aspects of The Silver Case that haven’t been able to stand the test of time, like clunky controls and ridiculously outdated mechanics, they’re in for a rare treat. This cult classic has been on the radar of SUDA fans everywhere for the past 18 years, and they’re now being rewarded with the title they’ve wanted to play above all others. The wait is over, and it’s certainly worth it – The Silver Case, the gritty adventure visual novel from the past, may not please the younger generation, but for the ’90s gamers, it’s a pleasant trip down memory lane, allowing us to revisit the vibe of games we used to treasure.

  • The Silver Case HD Remaster might seem visually dated and it has that unapologetic approach to puzzle solving that only retro games can provide, but the characters and story connecting them truly stands the test of time. I was completely drawn into the mystery and world of the game that it became difficult to take breaks or attend to daily activities.

  • The Silver Case is definitely not for everyone. While it’s visuals and presentation may prove interesting to some, the issues with its gameplay and some of its storytelling could turn off others. Those unfamiliar with Suda’s style may find the themes and pacing of the game remarkably slow. But fans of Suda’s work will definitely enjoy The Silver Case as it showcases his unique style incredibly well. Regardless of its setbacks, the PS4 release of The Silver Case is a unique and complex experience that could easily draw in those who are open to playing something undeniably strange and different.

  • Players who like hardboiled detective stories will likely find something of interest here as well, but most of all, for those familiar with the work of Suda51 – especially Killer7 and Flower, Sun, and Rain – The Silver Case will be an essential 'new' Suda51 trip.

  • It’s an experience that is exclusive to the medium, a combination of original storytelling and presentation that elevates it above your initial reactions. The Silver Case is a perfect example of why Suda51 is the David Lynch of video games. While it makes itself intentionally difficult to understand and is definitely not a game for everyone, if you’re interested in the weird and surreal, The Silver Case is an absolute must play.

  • Stranded in the framework of a police procedural, however, the game fails its best concepts. The Silver Case's unusual take on human conversations, its indecision about whether it wants to be just a visual novel or an adventure game where the player is a full participant, and its lack of focus in tying up any sort of cohesive plot, all add up to a mess of a game.
