- In the end, The Outlast Trials offers an enjoyable horror game that makes for a unique cooperative experience. The developers have managed to transfer the series’ formula into a way for it to work here, making it unlike anything else in the cooperative space. While there are indeed other horror games that centre around cooperative play, such as the recent influx of spirit hunting games like Phasmophobia, the overall vibe and gameplay experience are completely different compared to something like The Outlast Trials.
Ramón Varela · Apr 07, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - All in all I expected more from this horror game. My nephew has raved about how good the first two were and even though this has been in EA on PC for years I was eagerly awaiting the console release. Sadly, The Outlast Trials just didn’t live up to the hype for me. With monsters that didn’t really feel scary, and maps and objectives that just start to feel repetitive really quickly, I can really only recommend this one for the real Outlast fans.
Terrence Johnson · Apr 05, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - A trial by horror if there ever was one, The Outlast Trials does its best to flavour up the Outlast formula with its particular slant on co-operative gameplay. The results are decent alone or with friends, but too many times The Outlast Trials sacrifices its horror potential by implementing its newly-minted multiplayer features, consequently threatening to trip over and compromise the experience. Outlast‘s bespoke brand of horror manages to keep its head above the bloodbath thanks to brimming environments, meticulous presentational elements and its ability to unnerve, but trying to be bigger doesn’t payoff as better with The Outlast Trials, it’s merely good, but could’ve been great if it was smaller and more focused.
James Davie · Mar 17, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - You may miss the straightforward single-player experience of previous Outlast games, but in The Outlast Trials the cooperative multiplayer experience feels original and well thought out. Fun to play with friends, it can be as scary as hell, but should things all get too much, at least you can take a break and play some chess through those night vision goggles that are screwed into your head.
Valerio Tosetti / Sonakin · Mar 16, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - The Outlast Trials does something a little different with the survival horror genre and gets a lot of good mileage out of its Fallout-meets-Saw aesthetic. It's not always exactly what you'd call fun though and there are questions over the variety of it in its launch form but we grew to like it a lot.
Richie · Mar 15, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Like squeezing blood from a stone, The Outlast Trials is a repetitive chore that features monotonous searches and running laps through mazes until there is nothing left but pain and the option to share the misery with others.
Ben Thomas · Mar 13, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The Outlast Trials is a brutally fresh twist of the knife for the franchise. Cooperative play meshes seamlessly with the horror experience, allowing players to squad up and take on brutal trials that are as horrifying as they are fun to survive together. Solo play is more trouble for the same reward, so it’s a good thing the game includes a matchmaking system. With more content on the way, it’s clear Murkoff has struck gold with this new take on a loved IP!
Alex Beaty · Mar 08, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The Outlast Trials is almost entirely devoid of fun as a solo experience. Add friends or other random players, however, and there's ample enjoyment to be had fighting through the unrelenting horror together. As long as you have the stomach for all that blood, guts, mutilation, death, and unsettling imagery, of course.
