  • Resolving these technical hangups would certainly give Nightmare Cooperative a well-deserved shove from game very-goodness to game greatness. The difficulty level rests right on the border between fun and maddening, and its randomized mazes give it that element of surprise that makes a game dangerously addictive. In fact, the very worst thing about this game is the fact that it is nearly impossible to stop playing.

  • Ultimately, The Nightmare Cooperative is easily accessible and challenging (I still haven't reached the end), with tons of replayability thanks to its small army of enemy classes and its unpredictable nature, keeping players on their toes and often at a loss of what move to make. The only nightmarish part is the fact I won't be able to sleep properly until I finish it.

  • More often, though, all that planning and calculation serves to figure which hero is most disposable, who can most efficiently be left behind, that his comrades may survive The Nightmare Collective meat grinder just a bit longer.

  • Graphics are super high-quality. Character and item descriptions are pockmarked with nerdy goofball humor. Very, very highly recommended to anyone looking for a quirky challenge to wrap their head around.

  • The multi-character movement mechanic takes practice to work with, but once over the hump, you’ll be able to surmount most of what the game throws at you while still feeling challenged. Give The Nightmare Cooperative a shot if you’re bored by the existing base of roguelikes and dungeon crawlers.

  • Perhaps it’s that the risk-reward element of treasure chests was handled a lot better in 868-HACK. The Nightmare Cooperative isn’t easy, but it’s far less brutal than Michael Brough’s take on the roguelike. When gold is collectible throughout the dungeons and a treasure chest might only add a couple of enemies in another corner of the level, the challenge feels a bit lacking.

  • A great looking puzzler with smart mechanics, The Nightmare Cooperative is a fine example of the roguelike formula, expertly tuned for mobile devices.

  • An excellent, sleek, mobile-friendly roguelike smashed into a slide-based puzzler, with a smattering of clever gameplay mechanics, all beautifully polished. Very much recommended.

About the game

The Nightmare Cooperative is a strategic roguelike where you lead a group of unlikely comrades through some rather difficult situations. Your village has fallen on hard times (due to some rather reckless spending by the Village Council) and it’s up to you to bring back some gold. Or even just try and survive for a bit.
