  • The engaging cutscenes that take us through this stunning world, introducing the main character, should be enough to hook you into The Library of Babel. But the main problem the game has is found in the mechanics. The platforming doesn’t feel intuitive enough to be enjoyable and the stealth sections annoy. There is much love to be found in exploring the levels and the world itself, whilst the strong narrative helps, but it ultimately means that The Library of Babel is a beautiful, yet flawed, game.

  • The Library of Babel transcends the limits of a conventional murder mystery narrative, inviting players to delve deeper into a labyrinth of secrets.

  • The Library of Babel has beautiful art and an intriguing story, but the game built on top of that lacks polish and evokes old-school design in the worst way.

  • From a presentation standpoint, this is one of the strongest games I’ve played in 2023. That just makes it more annoying when the title’s core gameplay mechanics don’t hold up to the experience the developers have created. While they’re mostly okay in the early going, as the game tries to push players further, they simply don’t hold up well to what’s being asked of them.

  • I expected smoother movement, interesting characters, and better expression of the game’s themes, but The Library of Babel fell short. Its premise was interesting enough, and its eclectic influences could have elevated it, but it was undercut harshly by its design flaws – and its unoriginal plot couldn’t save it.

  • This is the type of game that would really benefit from an option to simply skip a gameplay segment. The Library of Babel should tweak character movement and item interactions via patches if it wants to appeal to a wider audience.

  • There’s a great game waiting to be checked out from The Library of Babel, but it’s currently buried under platforming puzzles that are too annoying to be fun. It’s a beautiful game with a compelling story, but it needs some difficulty adjustments to let the fun parts save the day.

  • All in all, it was an entertaining game. There were some secrets I didn't unlock in the end that might unlock something remarkable. But if something requires me to comb every path for hidden secrets and get 500 points in Flappy Drone, I'd rather watch someone else do it on YouTube than spend my own time on it.

  • The Library of Babel wasn’t always fun to play but I’ve rarely held outright ‘fun’ factor against a game, especially not one that is trying as hard as this one is. World exploration is rewarding thanks to a well-realised art direction and compelling sci-fi writing, but some of the game’s stealth sections tried my patience just a little too much. The literary inspiration lends this game a great launch pad and Tanuki Game Studio use every bit of the strange place space it gives them to craft a unique, if uneven, experience.

About the game

Inspired by Jorge Luis Borges’ short story of the same name, The Library of Babel welcomes you to a world 20,000 years after the extinction of humanity. The world is now run by advanced robots, who know very little about their mythical creators. All is well and orderly in a society run by robots, until the discovery of a library that contains everything that has, is, and will ever be written— the perfect harbinger of chaos. You play as Ludovik, a Seeker, sent to investigate a murder case in Babylon. When a state of emergency is suddenly declared, Ludovik finds himself in increasingly dangerous territory as he follows the murderer’s trail and unravels the mystery behind the Library’s sudden lockdown. Featuring a world full of vast jungles, abandoned temples, and plentiful cybernetic inhabitants to interact with, The Library of Babel promises both a thrilling adventure full of danger and intrigue, and a thoughtful, atmospheric tale of how we consider infinity.
