- Apart from the aforementioned visual performance issues on the Switch, Trails into Reverie’s biggest flaw is how hostile it is to newcomers. The narrative feels like the season finale to a long-running series, which this technically is, and so it requires you to be familiar with the cast and what they’ve gone through. The same applies to the gameplay. For longtime fans, this is the culmination of the Legend of Heroes, however, and perhaps the best send-off some of these characters could have gotten.
SebastiaanRaats · Jul 27, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie serves as the grand conclusion to the Crossbell and Cold Steel story arcs, tying up loose ends with an all-star crossover cast of characters. It does very little to catch new players up to speed with the narrative and context, and ultimately is not a good place to start for newcomers. However, Reverie features an incredibly in-depth gameplay experience to keep even the most hardcore of fans engaged for hours on end.
Henry Viola · Jul 24, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - As an epilogue to cap off a series spanning a whopping NINE games, Trails into Reverie delivers in all the areas that makes this one of the best RPG series on the market, featuring impeccable world building, compelling, nuanced characters and an enjoyable combat engine with plenty of room for experimentation. In a way, this entry feels like a reward for all those who have stuck with the series thus far and as we look towards Calvard and the future of the series as a whole, we can rest easy knowing that we’ve sent the heroes off in style, without any regrets.
Jae Lee · Jul 20, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The Legend of Heroes Trails into Reveire is an excellent addition to the series. My only advice is that players should consider playing the previous Trails game in order to have a full grasp of the lore surrounding the game and the events leading up to this new conflict. Knowing that this is the epilogue of the Erobonia and Crossbell arcs, I was surprised at how immersed I was with the story and how impressed I was with the JRPG mechanics that don’t feel like they are restricted to just consoles.
Conrad Huang · Jul 18, 2023 Reviewed on PC, PS5, PS4, SwitchRead full review - Trails Into Reverie is a hard game to recommend at the best of times. Are you a long-time Trails fan who wants one last hurrah with some of your favorite characters? Do you find it exciting to see how that baker NPC turned out? Then it has a lot to offer you. As a stand-alone RPG, however, it's almost inaccessible, and you should play the other games first. The extremely poor QA work in this title means that even die-hard fans will likely have a hard time enjoying the game; the well-translated script is surrounded by a truly unacceptable amount of bugs.
Chris "Atom" DeAngelus · Jul 17, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Everything else is the same as any other Trails game. The music, the political machinations, the anime girls fawning over Rean, and Lloyd being the chad he always is. The story here feels mostly skippable except for the C tidbits, but thanks to the localization and the wealth of features in Reverie Corridor, the game's own identity still shines through. It's worth it, just about. It's best classified as a spin-off celebration title, nothing more, nothing less.
Mohamed Hassan · Jul 12, 2023 Reviewed on PC, PS5, PS4, SwitchRead full review - The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie is not your average game; near decades of world-building, character arcs, and detailed lore have led to this culmination. The franchise isn’t perfect, but this series is wholly one-of-a-kind. It is a monolith that should be recognized alongside icons like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, and Persona. The details of the continent of Zemuria are unlike anything else I have experienced in gaming, and its cast now has several of my favorite characters in the medium. Reverie has the intimidating task of closing the page on three arcs that expanded across almost twenty years of characters and storytelling.
Cameron Hawkins · Jul 11, 2023 Reviewed on PS5 - As someone who is a bit of a lapsed fan of the Trails series and greatly enjoyed the recently localized Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure, I was partially hoping to have Reverie be the game to reignite that spark I used to have for this series. Instead, after completing Trails into Reverie, I find myself mostly grateful to move onto brighter pastures after Reverie ended up spending most of its run-time spinning its wheels, while its few contributions to the overall series largely fell flat.
Bryan Vitale · Jul 07, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Trails into Reverie is an all-star excursion that feels like one big franchise festival; your more traditional Trails campaign being the spine of what can be a brilliantly robust RPG, complete with more than enough gameplay depth to keep even the most hardcore players happy. As an epilogue to the Crossbell and Cold Steel games, it can seem a little tired in terms of creativity, but its faults are easily overlooked when you're back in the saddle with all of your favourite heroes.
Robert Ramsey · Jul 06, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Reverie is not a good place to start the Trails series. This is not a short game, it starts very slowly, and it’s effectively a sequel to every previous game. If you’re a fan, however, you can’t miss this. Especially since it has enough replay value to keep you busy until the Calvard games are localized.
