  • Each death taught me a new lesson. There’s a ton of customization and crafting to be done, and the areas that can be explored are very well made. The best part of this is that there is no single right way to play as you can tackle the game’s happenings in any way you want. Anyone who likes crafting, survival and possibly being eaten by cannibals (or eating the cannibals) should definitely give this game a whirl.

  • In a team of up to eight players, you can experience the nightmares inside The Forest with the security of others watching your back. Multiplayer may be enjoyable but, with a large squad on your side, fear of being hunted and alone is diminished, therefore affecting atmosphere and tension which is so prominent and successful in the main game.

  • The survival genre is so crowded that there’s little ground left to break, but The Forest has done it. Leveraging complex enemy AI and subverting expectations of the sort of terrible things waiting for you in the wild, Endlight Games creates a new sort of thriller.

  • Any issues I had with The Forest didn’t stop it from becoming the definitive survival experience on console in my eyes, however. If you’re yet to try the game on PC, its PS4 version is a surprisingly sleek and arguably just as rewarding time-sinker that won’t even make you feel bad for being a terrible parent. Sorry, Timmy, I am one with the trees now.

  • There's a lot to think about when it comes to surviving in The Forest, but the balance between each of its interlocking parts keeps the game moving at a riveting pace. For every danger the island offers, there's a smart solution around the corner. Combined with unpredictable enemies and captivating horror set-pieces, The Forest strikes a compelling balance between survival and horror that you won't soon forget.

  • For those who want co-op delights, a multiplayer mode exists. The mode more or less breaks the game, putting the odds overwhelmingly in your favor when it comes to squaring off against adversaries. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fun, as you and your pal can get up to a number of dark-yet-wacky shenanigans as you romp around. Just don’t expect to be scared nearly as much.

  • It's one of the best survival games I've played in recent memory. Whether I was creeping my way through the woods alone at night or playing with friends during the day and showing the local residents who the true masters of their domain are, I haven't played anything like this that's been so fun and terrifying all-in-one in a long, long time.

It’s I Am Legend told in the depths of the hinterlands, with a meaningful story progression that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Disregard the warnings on the walls and hidden between the trees at your own peril – and if you want a unique and memorable survival horror experience, then you should absolutely dare to do so.

  • Keeping its own game in the oven was a risk for Endnight but it’s one that has ultimately paid off. While inherently grindy and familiar in premise, The Forest boasts a much higher level of polish than its competitors, along with crafting systems and survival mechanics that are more intuitive and approachable. It may not mark a new evolution in the world of survival sandbox but it is certainly one the most refined frontrunners.

  • All told, The Forest is a decent survival title for PlayStation 4, and there's so much to see and do. The excellent AI will leave you genuinely terrified while playing alone in the dark, and you'll be even more grateful when an online buddy comes along to help you out. This is one of the best survival experiences on the PS4 right now, and with the horror edge, it really does stand out. If you're up for a challenge, this is one forest worth exploring further.
