- The Darkness II might be a shock at first. Where the original had a starkly realistic look and an unusual, strangely fluid approach to shooting, the sequel has an almost cartoonish look (its developers call the art style “graphic noir”), and a firmly grounded, linear, almost conventional approach to shooting. Well, except for the tentacle-like demon heads, of course.
Mikel Reparaz · Jun 24, 2012 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - This is The Darkness II's biggest problem: the potential for so much more is there, and Digital Extremes walks by it in a blur of blood and gunfire. The Darkness II is good more often than it isn't, but the good ideas that are present serve to contrast with the chances not taken. Digital Extremes has made a game worth exploring more than anything else for the human relationship between Jackie and Jenny, but it's easy to see how much more it could have been.
Arthur Gies · Feb 20, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The Darkness 2 succeeds in many ways. It lives up to (and surpasses) its similarly surprising progenitor, despite being made by a different developer. It's gorgeous, even if it's built in an aging engine (the same engine that powered 2008's Dark Sector, in fact). And it's a first-person shooter with a story that's worth a damn, something we don't see very often in general (and especially not with shooters, specifically). It doesn't fit neatly into a marketing campaign, which makes it all the more endearing.
Ben Gilbert · Feb 20, 2012 Reviewed on X360 - The Darkness II is more focused as an FPS than its predecessor and has improved core mechanics, but doesn’t have much of the dark edge or story experience that was in The Darkness. Darkness fans and gamers looking for a fun FPS alike will still find much to like here, though, as the core gameplay provides nothing less than a crazy and chaotic good time. The Darkness II may be visually different from the previous entry, but it still has plenty of good Darkness moments and gameplay.
Nick Michetti · Feb 16, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - As it stands, it leaves the player wanting more, which is good news. It also bodes well for the game’s cliffhanger ending and the possibility of further iterations — another Digital Extremes Darkness game building on The Darkness II’s foundation is likely to be just as cool and hopefully even cooler.
Phil Hornshaw · Feb 09, 2012 Reviewed on PC - The Darkness II is a bloody good time and definitely worth a chance. It’s not a perfect outing, and that doesn’t just stem from the short campaign, but there is character in this little game that will probably make you play it in one sitting. For all its shortcomings, there is something so rewarding about ripping enemies to pieces, and perhaps that’s because there isn’t enough game here for it to get too boring.
Adam Dolge · Feb 09, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - I wanted to like The Darkness II. I had a ton of fun massacring my way through my enemies and experiencing the intriguing story, but I was pretty disappointed that as soon as things got rolling, well, it ended. The Darkness II is fun while it lasts, but sadly doesn't last very long. If you're looking for a pretty unique action game with a decent plot, The Darkness II delivers, but don't really expect anything substantial.
Paul Goodman · Feb 09, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - The Darkness II is a dumb shooter that's three times as clever as it looks. So too is Jackie's murderous repertoire three times as extensive as that of other shooters. It might not last long and the action doesn't alter its tone, but The Darkness II's charms stuck with me long after I turned out the light.
Rich McCormick · Feb 07, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Despite some problems with polish and a story that takes time to develop into something great, The Darkness II ends up as an early treat in the new year. The narrative elements help the pacing considerably, breaking up Jackie's engaging and brutal murderfests. It may not end up being the best shooter of 2012, but it could very well be the one that makes you feel the most powerful.
Anthony Gallegos · Feb 07, 2012 Reviewed on PC, PS3Read full review - The Darkness II succeeds far more than it fails. The single-player experience features some genuine emotion in its narrative, something games which don't feature skull-extricating tentacles rarely manage to accomplish. And while the Vendettas cooperative multiplayer content feels lackluster by comparison, it's not bad either and serves to pad out this short but otherwise delightful game.
