- The Chant offers a thrilling foray into the survival horror genre. The acting and crafting elements make Jess’ plight feel incredibly dire, while the story remains gripping throughout. Despite some technical limitations, this grim island teeming with tension is still an eerie paradise worth exploring – especially when confronted by the mysterious Gloom!
Ross Mitchell · Dec 11, 2022 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - The Chant is by no means a great game, and there are plenty of sketchy aspects. Combat is iffy and clumsy, and there are a lot of fetch quests. Just the same, The Chant is mostly enjoyable thanks to a solid story and lush environments.
Jason D'Aprile · Nov 30, 2022 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - The combat can be frustrating, being overly simple while also not working as well as it should, but the tools at your disposal are fairly clever. There’s an interesting story here, especially when it comes to the other commune members, but my biggest complaint is that we barely get any time with each of them before diving in to fight their demons.
Heidi Hawes · Nov 29, 2022 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - It has a good atmosphere, simple mechanics and a fun overall story that kept me going for the six to seven hours it took. This is going to be one of those games that will be looked at in a few years as a hidden gem that people didn’t play.
Drew Leachman · Nov 22, 2022 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - A bizarre supernatural horror, The Chant's setup is a promising one, but developer Bass Token's execution is unfortunately lacking; reminiscent of something you might have played during the early 2000s.
Richard Walker · Nov 15, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Despite being funny more often than scary, the game does not make you regret the time spent in it. Although The Chant produces very contradictory sensations. None of its elements can be called outstanding, but there is nothing terrible and non-functional in the project either. It turned out to be such an average product, even with all the caveats that this is the debut work of a small studio.
Brau3er · Nov 15, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The limited level and game design are balanced out by the eerie atmosphere of the island. The Chant remains a breezy action-adventure with some horror elements, not that great, not terrible either.
Cosmin Vasile · Nov 15, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The Chant has some great things going for it with its unique brand of gameplay and interesting story, but problems ranging from underwhelming plot to janky combat bring down the enjoyment factor of the experience by a significant margin.
Usaid · Nov 10, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - With a short playtime and three different endings to unlock, this should be fun for others to watch as well. It may not be the scariest game to release this year, but The Chant has a freaky design to its creatures that will unsettle some late at night.
Paulmichael Contreras · Nov 08, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The Chant has an intriguing premise and setting that set it apart from its cousins in the horror/action adventure sphere. While it doesn’t break any new ground with its mechanics or combat, and it’s definitely not very scary, its exploration of psychological states adds a bit of specific narrative color. Budgetary limitations in character models, lack of refinement, weak combat, and inelegant animations aside, The Chant is just unique enough to make it appealing to fans of the genre.
