- The unique take on traditional turn-based combat, the emotionally dark narrative, and the excellent musical soundtrack are the true rewards beneath poor dungeon design, an unimaginative causality link mechanic, and unclear objectives. The Caligula Effect: Overdose is a charming and worthwhile albeit niche JRPG as long as you go in with the correct expectations, given the game’s low budget.
Henry Viola · May 31, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The good intention is here and you can feel it while playing the game, which says that this title still has a heart and soul somewhere but it got lost in trying to fix the original. Maybe if Aquria makes a sequel, we will see those intentions in their full glory.
Anna Gard · Apr 08, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The Caligula Effect: Overdose has a great combat system and an entertaining story, but poor visuals, a lack of meaningful choices, repetitive music, and a lackluster social system means this is a high school reunion you probably want to skip.
Will Borger · Apr 05, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Overall, The Caligula Effect: Overdose does give the player some things to enjoy through their 30+ hour experience. Even with an engaging combat system to some fun side characters, it just doesn’t have enough to carry all the dullness it brings with it in its story and environments. And with other games like Persona 5 that do almost everything Caligula Effect: Overdose has done but better, it’s a little tough to recommend. Despite the competition, The Caligula Effect: Overdose offers a solid experience that has some features that make it worth trying it out at the very least.
Zack Potter · Apr 01, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - All in all, though, I’m pleased with what I got. I never played the original Caligula Effect and I’m glad that I didn’t, as I probably would have looked at this as if it had something to prove to me. Instead, I was able to view an interesting, albeit flawed, game featuring exemplary music and artwork with a fresh lens, and I can’t really say no to that.
Jelani James · Mar 16, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The Caligula Effect: Overdose is like a sandwich made out of really nice bread, but poor filling. There’s a great combat system and serious personal message, here. Yet, it’s buried beneath tedious dungeon design, poor pacing, and a bland story. Putting everything through a new engine, then adding more characters is like handing back the same sandwich with a few extra slices of bread on either side. It ultimately suffers from having too much content with too little heart or flavor.
Gabs Tanner · Mar 12, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The Caligula Effect: Overdose is still definitely a flawed, frustrating work. Its shortcomings are many, and might still be too intractable for some, but the refinements and additions have, for me at least, papered over the cracks just enough to make it worth putting up with. Patient and curious JRPG enthusiasts will find plenty to appreciate, if not necessarily love, if they try for a quick stay in Mobius.
Josh Tolentino · Mar 07, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - In the end, there isn’t much here that feels fully developed. While The Caligula Effect: Overdose has some interesting ideas, none of them really work. I suspect that after some time with The Go-Home Club, players will be longing to go home to the cozy comfort of a classic JRPG. Better to avoid this simulation from the start.
Andrew King · Mar 06, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Despite its embarrassing presentation and performance, I was mostly surprised with how much I ended up enjoying The Caligula Effect: Overdose‘s premise and gameplay. It’s a shorter, more streamlined, and less exaggerated take on what made Persona so popular to begin with. A JRPG with not a lot of hand-holding or exploration, but featuring a fantastic combat system and faster pacing to make up for it. A perfect addition for your JRPG catalogue while you wait for the more than inevitable port of Persona 5 for the Switch later this year.
Leo Faria · Mar 05, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Without a doubt, The Caligula Effect: Overdose is a great example of how adding a bit (or a lot, in this case) of polish to an already existing game can make it truly shine. To those of you who are new to this game entirely who are looking for a unique, and very macabre, spin on the school days JRPG trope, then look no further than this game right here. And, to those who took a trip with the original Caligula Effect and didn’t like where they ended up, I’d suggest having another go-around with Overdose; you just might like where it takes you this time!
