  • From a safe yet unwieldy control scheme to a lack of cohesive content, The Assembly has the edges of a complete adventure game with just a few too many pieces missing from being able to assemble the complete picture.

  • Hypothetically speaking, if this were an experiment being conducted by an underground research organization, trying to determine the validity of PlayStation VR as a platform, it would be deemed rather dramatically inconclusive.

  • Unfortunately, The Assembly follows safely along the path of other VR games with a functional, but absolutely cumbersome, movement scheme. The good thing about this is it isn’t likely to get players motion sick. On the other hand, it’s unwieldy and undesirable when compared to regular old adventure/exploration gameplay. The storyline and characters prove intriguing, but gameplay fails to support them.

  • he Assembly is the kind of story that will stick with you for a while after you’ve finished it, mulling things over in your head for the next few days. There are some moralistic and philosophical questions asked by the whole experience, and there are subtle nods in the design and writing of the game that show strong awareness of that fact, but it doesn’t require engagement on that higher-plane if you don’t wish to do so.

  • The Assembly feels like a small part of a bigger, much more engaging game. It's a good foundation for a world full of mystery, but it ends just as it starts to get interesting. A game that fully explores the dystopian facility, its history, and the state of the outside world is something I'd be interested in. However, as it is, The Assembly is hard to recommend.

  • I really looked forward to The Assembly and I feel let down, not because it’s a bad game it’s just a game that didn’t need a VR update or price tag, and is made all the worst for it. I am constantly finding the PSVR disappointing, not the product itself just the rehash of old games with so called VR added, developers should start afresh with VR and give the gamers want they really want, new experiences for a new generation of gamers.

  • A massive downgrade from the PC version of the title, the visuals can induce headaches or nausea if played for too long, and this is made even worse by the fact that the game doesn't need to be in virtual reality to begin with. It's a title that's cynically riding on the coattails of VR novelty, and while that may make for smart business, it doesn't create a great experience.

  • As a videogame equivalent of a 1950s pulp science fiction short story, The Assembly works. But it’s nowhere near as good a morality tale, or a virtual reality experience, as it needs to be in order to truly stand out.

  • The Assembly is a good idea with great building blocks for its intended exploration and puzzle mechanics but it feels somewhat undeveloped. It'll no doubt leave you intrigued yet ultimately pining for more.

  • The Assembly does make more attempt than many VR titles to offer a traditional gaming experience, and in that sense we’re relatively happy to forgive the unremarkable technical aspects. But both the narrative and the gameplay suffer from a lack of focus and purpose, resulting in just another half successful experiment while you wait for a ‘proper’ VR game to be released.

About the game

The Assembly is a first-person interactive drama for mature audiences, created from the ground up for virtual reality headsets. An experience with two sides to everything, where the truth is never clear, and a question is always left open: When does the end justify the means?
