- All in all, you really should check out Tetris 99. It’s a great title that works extremely well as a freebie for Nintendo Switch Online users. There isn’t much content included, but there really doesn’t need to be. I’ve played my fair share of it, and I know I’ll be coming back for more, simply because it’s just plain fun. Now let’s hope we get a Puzzle League 99 to go with this!
D. Add that layer to a game that's plenty capable of instilling tension on its own, and you've got a riveting experience that even at its worst is still a game very much worth playing.
Peter Brown · Feb 20, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - That being said, it does look like Tetris 99 will, hopefully, only go up from here as more is potentially added. If nothing else, Tetris 99 shows how resilient the classic Tetris formula is as well as how battle royale can transcend genres, so don’t expect either to completely disappear anytime soon.
Tomas Franzese · Feb 19, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Tetris 99 is a maniacally intense battle royale that forces you to make strategic decisions beyond just where to drop your next piece. This is Tetris on steroids, where a good run can quickly turn into a disaster and a bad run can turn into a surprising comeback. There’s a lot of luck involved, which can lead to some unfair-feeling knockouts, but it’s quick and easy to jump back in.
Steven Petite · Feb 19, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Tetris 99 is a pleasant surprise, and is my favorite content offered by the Nintendo Switch Online service to date. The idea of playing Tetris against 98 other players at once seems ludicrous but is fun in practice and delivers intense moments just like when you’re among the final few in a battle royale game.
Kyle Hilliard · Feb 18, 2019 Reviewed on Switch - I have no doubt that Tetris 99 was conceived to convince people to subscribe to Nintendo’s paid online service, as it’s a completely free game devoid of microtransactions, but also devoid of single-player content, requiring an online subscription to be enjoyed. I don’t blame them. In fact, I salute them for their decision. Nintendo didn’t just come up with a half-baked product in order to entice consumer interest, they came up with one of the greatest iterations of Tetris and the coolest Battle Royale game I have ever played. Tetris 99 showed up from out of nowhere and it’s now one of my favorite games from 2019 so far.
Leo Faria · Feb 14, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Let’s face it, at the price of zero pounds this is an excellent title, and for such a cheap price the offline DLC is a bargain for one of the longest running franchises in videogames, especially with the gameplay being so timeless. The battle royale spin is easily the most original and probably the best modifier the Tetris formula has had in its history and is the kind of invigoration it needed to keep it relevant in today’s gaming landscape, if you’ve got a Switch then get on it.
Nick Gillham · Jun 09, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - This is what Nintendo need to keep on doing to ensure subscription to Nintendo Switch Online stays worthwhile, however, this is just Tetris with a very addictive online element, and can quickly wane once the initial honeymoon period is over. Those who really enjoy basic Tetris will be right at home with this iteration. It is fast, frantic and somewhat unpredictable gameplay is what makes it so addictive in the first place - for others, the repetition might kick in after some time.
Neil Flynn · May 22, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Ultimate or Splatoon 2, then there’s really no reason not to grab this freebie. After over 30 hours of play time, 369 matches and 19 wins, I’m still giving into that “just one more match” mentality, ever eager to dive back in and attempt to rack up those victories. If Tetris 99 is in any way indicative of Nintendo’s strategy concerning doling out member-specific bonuses, things are truly looking good for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
Mark Reece · Mar 23, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - A brutally singular and unexpectedly brilliant subversion of what you know about Tetris and battle royale, if you’re a Switch Online subscriber, you absolutely need to download it.
