- Tails of Iron demands your best in this unforgiving world full of death. The combat is swift and brutal but rewarding with tons of items to deck out your heroic king in the upcoming battles. The backtracking for the mandatory side missions can become tedious but exploring this world is a joy regardless. Tails of Iron is a hidden gem within the dark fantasy genre and well-worth exploring if you don't mind all the death that will follow.
Grayshadow · Dec 31, 2021 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Thanks to its enchanting art, well written story, heroic rodents and satisfying combat throughout, Tails of Iron stands apart from the seemingly endless wave of Soulslike ARPGs. It modifies the combat formula just enough to make it interesting and couples it with characters that are full of warmth and wit, battling forces that are competent yet fairly matched foes.
Mark Steighner · Oct 22, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - I really wanted to like Tails of Iron more than I did. Everything about its presentation, from its graphics to its phenomenal storytelling, hooked me. It had everything to be one of my favorite indies of the year. But the gameplay just HAD to resort to annoying cheap tropes found in less successful Soulslikes, throwing you into waves of small rooms where you have to deal with hordes of enemies that can one-shot you just by blinking.
Leo Faria · Oct 08, 2021 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Tails of Iron is not for the fainthearted. It’s a bloody, brutal, blistering experience from start to finish. Its combat smartly mixes skill and strategy. The game will push you to your limits, but it’s hard not to have fun skewering and slaughtering your way to redemption. While the game’s scope is unfortunately a bit limited, I have a feeling this won’t be the last time we hear from Redgi.
Scott MacDonald · Sep 27, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Its 2D world is truly engaging, while the challenging combat offers plenty of satisfaction once it is mastered. Tails of Iron might not be an overly ambitious game, but it is entertaining and rewarding.
Cosmin Vasile · Sep 26, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Overall Tails of Iron is an enjoyable experience. Action-RPG fans will find a lot to like here. I know some people don’t like 2D games, but everything here works well, especially the beautiful art and the combat. Some of the side quests can feel like a drag, but the main questline will draw you in and keep you hooked.
Jake Plant · Sep 24, 2021 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - I really enjoyed my time with Tails of Iron, it had a very mature story to tell wrapped up in a charming yet dark world. The clever use of communication between the creatures while using ‘Geralt’ for narration duties is definitely one of my highlights from this game.
Terrence Johnson · Sep 24, 2021 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Tails of Iron could go deeper on the story and lighter on the backtracking, but if it ever gets a sequel I hope it maintains obvious love seen in the art direction and design.
Martynas Klimas · Sep 23, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It’s easy to warm to Redgi despite him not having a voice, which is quite an achievement in itself, and as you travel around his kingdom, fighting off bugs, frogs and other pesky creatures, you’ll come to care about his fate. It’s the combat that’s the real star of the show here though, encouraging you to keep an eye on the various quest boards even when the tasks they offer only send you to the same few locations.
Richard Seagrave · Sep 17, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - From milking bugs to slaying frogs with jetpacks, Tails of Iron is an off-the-walls, brilliantly intuitive sidescroller, but it has a heart and keeps you gripped from start to finish as you slaughter a conveyor belt of would-be challengers. It’s not about avenging your father, not entirely - it’s about family and community. Vin Diesel would be proud. Sadly, it’ll probably get lost in the busy end-of-year shuffle among the triple-A powerhouses. But in the downtime between releases, make some room for Tails of Iron - it’s one of 2021’s best.
