Critic Reviews
- The core of Sword Coast Legends has potential. The single player story is fine, but not remarkable, and the capacity for multiplayer is welcome but ultimately disappointing. The best thing about the game, seemingly, is that it’s sort of like a set of tools that could be used (if you’re ambitious enough) to create something very cool. The game just doesn’t quite make it cool enough by itself.
Matt Halm · Nov 12, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Despite its lack of beauty and bite, Sword Coast Legends nevertheless has things going for it. The familiar combat system works, the humour of Hommet helped me survive the quests, there’s a huge amount of loot, and the critical path is solid. It may take too long to get into its stride, but it’s a useful morsel to tide us over until an actual tabletop roleplay simulator arrives.
Dan Griliopoulos · Nov 05, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Sword Coast Legends features a reasonably strong campaign as it advances and is great to listen to and look at, however it can be terribly linear throughout. The shallow combat system, with lack of skill variety and shallow dungeon master mode detract just a little too much and stop the game being great.
Chris Wray · Nov 04, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Sword Coast Legends will grow over time. Significant updates are already scheduled, but right now it doesn’t provide the ambitious set of creation tools and repeat-crawling chaos that I was hoping it would. Sword Coast Legends has some great ideas and a wonderful world to draw upon, but struggles to live up to its potential.
Daniel Tack · Nov 02, 2015 Reviewed on PC - If n-Space remains steadfast and keeps working on them, this might eventually be the digital Dungeons & Dragons many were hoping for. People won't mind buying new adventures, classes, and races if they come out alongside new pen-and-paper releases! But don't blow all of your goodwill with sectioned-off content. As a Dungeon Master, I'm selfishly rooting for you. Just no more gods-damned 3x3 light grid puzzles.
Zack Furniss · Oct 31, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Sword Coast Legends is a solid game who’s one saving grace is its infinitely customizable DM mode. Fans of isometric RPGs or players looking for a traditional D&D experience won’t be disappointed with Sword Coast Legends.
Danny Saya · Oct 29, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The developers kept this one in the oven a bit longer than originally planned to add some polish and kill some bugs. It’s a shame they couldn’t get do more work on the DM mode to make it a real creative tool. The main campaign should last you about 30 hours but with no real freedom of choice a single play through will suffice. User generated content could supplement what the developers churn out for DLC but the quality of that is dubious.
Robert Lashley · Oct 29, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Sword Coast Legends usually works, but that’s all I can say for it. There’s an obvious love for the lore on display, but there are no Minscs or Boos here; no thrilling battles where victory springs as much from brains as endurance. The great tragedy of Sword Coast Legends is that the last couple of years have all but paved the way for it to emerge as the best of the cRPG renaissance, but its dull cooldown-based combat, linear quests, and cookie-cutter user-made content ensure that it's likely to be among the first to be forgotten.
Leif Johnson · Oct 27, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall, Sword Coast Legends offers a fun romp through the D&D world of Faerun once again. D&D fans should love the narrative. Unfortunately, the combat and often repetitive feel of other aspects of the game, and the generally restrictive DM tools, keep it from being the critical hit and genre-changer it could have been.
John Keefer · Oct 26, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There’s the odd technical hiccup, like the invite button in Dungeon Master mode that doesn’t do anything, faint input delay and stuttering without good reason. Nevertheless, it functions for the duration, reliably and all too predictably. The last thing a game of Dungeons & Dragons should be is unadventurous.
