Surge Deluxe is perfect for a handheld system, allowing the player to dip in and out as they please. A long wait in a queue or a 15 minute bus ride is the ideal opportunity to whip out the Vita and take another crack at the high score. It may just be following in a long line of similar puzzle type games, but it does bring colour and energy to the genre (literally).

  • The appeal of a puzzle game should be in the task assigned. Just matching colors with greater expedience is not a particularly fun assignment, and the way Surge Deluxe lays all its cards out on the table right at the start leaves little to no interest for what’s ahead.

... but with smart, moreish points-hoarding and presentation that finds a sweet spot between functionality and fizzing sci-fi visuals, Surge Deluxe is worth the effort.

  • Surge Deluxe is a shockingly enjoyable experience built upon an engaging leaderboard system that constantly encourages you to up your game. The match-three mechanics are deep yet accessible, while the presentation is second to none. The only downside is that the title’s devilishly moreish, meaning that your addiction may land you in a hospital bed or strange social therapy session. Still, we’d argue that the release is worth it.

The overall quality of the matching experience was ultimately strong enough to pull me back, largely helped by the smart secondary Puzzle Mode. It’s a shorter, more snack-able experience, which also helps improve your skills.

  • For those who loved the PS Mobile version, Surge Deluxe is a definitive buy because its extra additions make the game a full and polished experience. It’s a shame the difficulty doesn’t ramp up quickly enough and there are few incentives to hook you apart from high scores. Still, when on a roll, Surge Deluxe is a lightning-fast tactical brain teaser.

  • It is an update but the features added are substantial, this seems to be a reworking of the title as opposed to just adding in trophies and shipping it. As mentioned above, the main drawback for me is it’s longevity but that’s a personal opinion – with leaderboards added there will be ample game time here if you can get some score chasing going.

  • It'll take time to learn, but it's time well spent. Climbing the leaderboards is an enormously addictive experience, particularly if you have friends playing. FuturLab demonstrates a fine understanding of what once made puzzle games so great. If you own a Vita, you should buy this -- particularly at such a generous price point.

  • Ironically, what makes Surge Deluxe so instantly sensational is perhaps also what holds it back from being one of the greats. That riot of colour and sound, that constant positive reinforcement, can make it feel a little too eager to please. And yet each play session offers a very tangible surge, a rush of dopamine that will take some time to wear off.

  • Surge Deluxe is a great example of the Match-3 genre. Bright and beautiful, frenetic and challenging – it’s a wonderful puzzle game that works brilliantly on the PS Vita. There’s not a lot of content, though, and once you get bored of trying to climb the leaderboards you’re unlikely to go back for a blast of the puzzle mode more than once or twice. That said, it is what it is, and most people won’t come to it hoping for a smorgasbord of game modes. If your fingers are fast enough, Surge Deluxe is a great time-killer.
