  • Unfortunately, this is as good as it gets. Superman Returns is about as free-roaming and open as going to a grocery store that has no food. You can fly around all you want, but you can't actually interact with much. Other than rushing over to the pre-arranged, but largely redundant, main story events that appear as hot spots on the map every so often, the only activity afforded is the pointless fetch-quest of finding 100 glowing cats.

  • Superman Return just isn't exciting enough to sustain your interest and, seeing as it's based on an excellent movie and a comic book legacy stretching back six decades, there is really no excuse for making such a brain numbingly dull title that is only partially saved by its above average presentation. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's just another sub par officially licensed game.

  • Superman Returns looks like a passable game, and it definitely feels like one when you first start playing it

  • If you're an Xbox 360 owner who has played the Superman Returns demo, you've already played the best part of this game. It's fun to fly above the city and then zoom down at the speed of sound to zigzag among the buildings, and it's even fun to pound on robots for a short time. But the fun quickly ends courtesy of the bland graphics, lousy controls, boring combat, and repetitive objectives.

  • Superman Returns is so criminally lacking in any inspiration, though, and is such a dismal waste of the licence that you'll want to curl up and rock yourself into a trance. At least then your mind can entertain you with thoughts of what a good Superman game might be like.

About the game

In Superman Returns: The Videogame, you explore and protect the truly living city of Metropolis — one that is not only expansive (with 80 sq miles and over 9,000 buildings), but also changes dynamically with you as you affect gameplay. Citizens will run away in terror from newly-erupting danger and also exit their cars to cheer and snap photos as you fly overhead to save them. Superman may be invincible, but Metropolis is not. Player choice matters, as Metropolis' destruction will affect your ability to progress.
