  • Here’s the final word: If you enjoy MMOs and Star Wars then Star Wars: The Old Republic may be a great game for you.  You may have to suspend your disbelief as the story progresses and you may lose sight of an entire character from time to time.  However, the vast and rich world of Star Wars is paid serious homage even in 2020 as you journey to another time, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

  • Massively-multiplayer online games are always a work-in-progress, so it’s not surprising that Star Wars: The Old Republic’s launch wasn’t flawless. What matters is that it’s an extremely satisfying experience that sets the stage for a bright future, so long as BioWare continues to support the game for the coming years with constant updates.

  • Likewise, if you're a lapsed World of Warcraft player and your craving something similar enough to migrate your skills to, The Old Republic will certainly please. Even if you're just curious about MMOs and you'd like to get your feet wet, The Old Republic is a great place to get in on the ground floor, because it's ambitious enough to build up a large player base and the license and developer will keep those players around for quite some time.

  • You can't have real choice without letting the bad guys opt to be good every once in a while, and you can't have Wookiees and Ithorians messing up the fully-voiced cutscenes. You also can't give players a focused story without taking some of the larger choices away. If you're willing to accept the costs of BioWare's innovations, the game delivers one of the most refreshing and attractive advancements the MMO genre has seen in years.

BioWare hasn’t cast itself as a guerrilla movement trying to subvert the MMOG with The Old Republic. Instead it’s been the Empire, working to produce a slick, gigantic experience that, in the time of free-to-play, feels polished enough to demand monthly fees. How long this empire – vast and imposing, but archaic in structure – will last in the face of newer MMOGs and their rebellious payment models isn’t easy to discern.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic's unabashed resampling of the prevailing MMO model offers a valid and in many ways more approachable alternative to Blizzard's juggernaut. It's a great starting point for those curious about the genre, as well as a refreshing change of pace for seasoned MMO veterans. Blizzard can hang onto its coffers of gold for the time being, but as of now, Azeroth is no longer alone in the universe.

The dialogue and story is why you should want to play The Old Republic, and it’s presented excellently. The UI needs much more flexibility though. Voice acting is superb throughout, the orchestral sound-track slips in and out effortlessly, and everything from blasters to alien-babble is pure Star Wars. PvP is brilliant, and the branching story is wonderfully complex. Classes are well-designed. A little quest variety wouldn’t go astray, though.

  • The surprises are few, but The Old Republic is nonetheless an online RPG of uncommon quality. And with a broad, overarching story to guide you through, you might even reach maximum level with a smile on your face, even if you are one to abandon an MMOG before that point. Such is the power of a beloved universe with so many tales still left to tell.

  • Every couple of years we get an MMO whose level of hype and expectations are greater than the game could ever aspire to be and the same remains true for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Even so, the game is simply exceptional. If you’re a Star Wars fan, a fan of BioWare RPGs, and you don’t mind a themepark styled MMO, you will undoubtedly have a great time in the world BioWare has created with Star Wars: The Old Republic. BioWare has successfully fused the foundation of a solid MMO with their industry-leading story telling capabilities to create a final product that convincingly makes the case that as great as many MMOs have been, we’ve definitely been missing a significant piece of the puzzle for all these years.

  • The Old Republic plunges players into the Star Wars universe we've always wanted to live in, and succeeds as both and RPG and an MMO. And perhaps just as thrilling, there's an oversized Bantha's worth of potential in expanding areas like space combat and the companion system, or in adding new features like guild housing. This one's got a long, bright future ahead of it.
