  • ‘Splosion Man’s many humorous moments and generally pleasant silliness counteracts stage design that doesn’t really offer enough visual variety through the game’s 50 levels. Rather than guts and blood spray, scientists you’ve blown up spew neatly-packaged deli meats from their wounds. It’s simply brilliant. Also, dying too many times in a row unlocks the option to take the “Way of the Coward” and immediately skip the next level.

  • 'Splosion Man's look and feel is masterfully crafted. The character himself, with his spastic ranting and crazed animation, evokes Woody Woodpecker at his most deranged, reimagined for the 21st Century. He's the perfect lead for game that hits its aesthetic tone by exploding hapless bystanders into piles of cartoon meat. Everything else looks great overall, with a coherent look that's at the same time cheery and sinister.

  • You need to have perfect timing to play cooperatively, which is great if you've got a buddy beside you on the couch but not so hot if you're looking for a teammate randomly over Xbox Live. And camera angles can sometimes switch to a new location that obscures hazards after you get killed. All of the 3D visuals are displayed on a 2D plane, so the camera changes aren't wildly different, but sometimes a little means a lot in a twitch game like this.

  • 'Splosion Man has come out of nowhere, with little to no hype surrounding its release, but it easily ranks as one of the best XBLA games we've played. It's a remarkably simple idea that's been turned into a truly devilish platform puzzler, and it's full of charm and humour without coming across as cheesy. At only 800 Microsoft Points 'Splosion Man comes highly recommended.

  • For such a small, independent team, Twisted Pixel has proven that it has the chops to hang with some of the bigger studios (think Insomniac Games, even Pixar) when it comes to developing unique-looking and original titles. ’Splosion Man is without doubt one of the most polished, original, and enjoyable games on Xbox LIVE, a great way for Microsoft to kick off its “Summer of Arcade.” If you enjoy stern, sometimes unforgiving platforming challenges, you simply shouldn't miss it.

With The Maw and now 'Splosion Man, Twisted Pixel has emerged just this year as one of the best indie developers feeding content onto Xbox Live Arcade. 'Splosion Man is bursting with humor, personality, and classic platforming challenges. Not a moment goes by without seeing something new and exciting and 'Splosion Man himself is one of the most endearing new videogame characters of the year. Twisted Pixel clearly had fun creating this insane game, and you'll have fun playing it. For all of man's vast intelligence, we're still just bags of meat. 'Splosion Man lets us revert to something primal and barbaric, and detonate our intellectual side.

  • In the end I honestly did enjoy the game despite how obnoxious the voices and music were. I admit there were more than a few times I got frustrated with the difficulty of it all but to be honest I found it to be remarkably refreshing and exactly what the gaming industry needs: a game that is about the gameplay. I couldn't ask for more. Maybe they will do a sequel titled 'Splosion Man Jr, and they'll rid it of all the obnoxious quips. I know I'd buy it!

  • 'Splosion Man brings something new to the core 2D platformer genre and has plenty of the old that made it such a popular genre. The game is easy to pick up and play but provides a challenge for those that feel the days of hard to beat platformers are but a distant memory. ' Splosion Man is, so far, the best addition to XBLA this year.

  • Its immediate charms are tarnished only by some repetitive level design and some minor control frustrations. It's an undeniably strong opening salvo in the Summer of Arcade season, but frugal players may want to wait and try some of the other treats in store before committing their Microsoft Points to a game that nudges greatness but never quite embraces it.
