  • Sound Shapes looks and sounds beautiful, and boasts gameplay that works in perfect harmony. Those of you that don't get hooked on the ambitious Editor area may find a lack of meaningful campaign content, but the Death Mode and Beat School options augment a little longevity. If you're the type of person that enjoys user generated content, then this will definitely be your jam – and even if you don't, the clever concept and cross-buy compatibility still make it a sound investment.

  • Almost, nearly, but not quite painfully indie cool, Sound Shapes delivers a simple, stylish and highly enjoyable platforming experience that packs some seriously good tunes. If your preferences are a little more traditional, then perhaps Sound Shapes might be too out there for you - and the music from the likes of Beck and Deadmau5 might also not be to your taste. But if it is, and you want something that’s bright, bold and fun, this is well worth a look.

  • Sound Shapes is a remarkable convergence of music and platforming. ...There is so much personality infused in these stages that I felt as if I understood the people who designed them, at least a little. And that's what great tools, and a great community, can do. Sound Shapes is a transcendent experience in so many ways. Maybe its most important contribution is giving a voice to the world through music and action.

  • There’s no doubt that Queasy Games should be proud of their astounding game. Full of life and bursting with creativity, Sound Shapes is truly something to behold. It might not be reinventing the platformer, but it’s musically entwined gameplay is something everyone should experience.

  • The best thing about Sound Shapes is how elegantly it blends really interesting musical elements into accessible gameplay. This game just oozes creativity and character. The level creator/editor and community give Sound Shapes legs that are long enough to be entertaining long after you’ve gone through what is offered in its campaign mode.

  • With the exception of quirky platforming physics, there’s nothing to not like in Sound Shapes. Fantastic pre-made levels and a profound level editor make the game a great value as well. Whether you’re academically interested in the more experimental line of games on the PSN or you just want a unique and enjoyable platformer, you can’t go wrong with Sound Shapes.

  • Sound Shapes doesn't quite reach its potential. There are some truly great level designs here (some with the occasional ship to pilot, avoiding hazards in space or water) but there's not enough of them, and before you know it, you've finished the main campaign. In fact, the majority of the level designs are more of a chore to grind through than the occasional visual and auditory delights. There are only three Beck levels, and of those, truly only two are worth playing, as they're the best levels in the game.

  • The user-generated levels seem to promise nigh on infinite content, but the interplay between music and design that the best Sound Shapes levels achieve is a difficult thing to master. ...There's a lot of potential in Sound Shapes' basic design, and while it may take some time for users to unlock all of it, it'll certainly be worth it when they do.

  • I was unable to log on to the game's online service for most of the five days I had with it thanks to some frustrating server issues. When I finally managed to get online, I found that many users knew how to design a good level, and a fair few knew how to put together a good tune, but very rarely did I come across someone capable of doing both. There's a lot of potential in Sound Shapes' basic design, and while it may take some time for users to unlock all of it, it'll certainly be worth it when they do.

  • Sound Shapes fits in very well with the Play, Create, Share mantra that Sony has been fostering over the last few years and, while it plays, looks and sounds great on PlayStation 3, it really finds its place on Vita with a good set of headphones. The handheld is perfect for the game's creative aspirations: the built-in levels are short and perfect for a portable, and it's easy to hop into the creator, mess around with something and save quickly whenever inspiration takes you.
