Critic Reviews
- HIGH First character maker in a Sonic game? Sweet! LOW The level design, story, and gameplay are shockingly underwhelming.
· Dec 08, 2025 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The short campaign, uneven level design, and imperfect controls all put a hamper on the overall experience. While Sonic Forces may be far from the perfect Sonic game, there’s still an enjoyable adventure worth experiencing especially for platformer fans and those who’ve enjoyed Sonic Team’s recent efforts.
Jared Rosenberg · Nov 22, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The Sonic levels are great, the visuals are really bright and charming and the music is excellent (Feel free to take that with a pinch of salt though, I still frequently listen to the Sonic R and Sonic Adventure soundtracks which this one will take a place along side for sure!). For the first time in years, I actually enjoyed and looked forward to going back to a Sonic game and will continue to hunt those red star rings for a while yet. But the main USP of the avatars let the side down.
Jamie Collyer · Nov 17, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Playing Sonic Forces is like being on a terrible rollercoaster. All you can ever really do is push forward and hope for the best.
Richard Seagrave · Nov 17, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - This title faces the same issues as recent 3D Sonic titles that it tries to be a game with something for everyone instead of finding what it wants to become and stick to it. There’s hesitation in how far Forces wants to take what could be really interesting unexplored topics like what in the world has changed while Eggman took over, this ultimately just makes it the same story as ever “Eggman has a new creation and strange power, Sonic and his friends save the day.”
Andrew Stretch · Nov 15, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - It’s just unfortunate that it was released so soon after Mania, which took the best of old Sonic and made it sparklingly relevant again. Forces, however, is plagued by inconsistent level design, floaty controls, and a risible Saturday morning cartoon storyline that only kids and rabid Sonic fans will find entertaining.
Andy Kelly · Nov 15, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Sonic's latest adventure has moments that recapture the best moments of past games, but they're spread too thin--both literally and figuratively.
Joseph Ocasio · Nov 14, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - In the end, Sonic Forces isn’t the worst that the franchise has ever been. That distinction will likely be held by Sonic ‘06 until the end of time. But being “not the worst game of the series” shouldn’t excuse a lot of the glaring flaws that Sonic Forces displays. Fans will defend Forces vehemently, but they shouldn’t. They deserve better.
Ashley Bates · Nov 13, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Sonic Forces mashes together everything from Sonic’s history, from 2D/3D mechanics to over-the-top action spectacle pieces. The new customizable hero feature breathes fresh life into the franchise, but the 3D gameplay it uses overpowers the game’s attempt to combine what has made the different eras of Sonic work.
Evan Slead · Nov 13, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Sonic Forces is a disappointing step back for the franchise. Uninteresting level design and subpar gameplay on all three playable characters make for a game that can be frustrating to get through.
