- SOMA is a survival horror game that shows us a bleak future on several levels. The game is built and driven entirely by its atmosphere and characters, with the gameplay itself offering little more than terrified fetch quests and cat-and-mouse tactics. Visually the game will make you take it slow, one step at a time, and while its physics engine is fun to play with it can be bothersome to find the right angle for interaction.
Alexander Thomas · Dec 13, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - SOMA isn’t an excellent example of horror, but instead shines its brightest through its story telling. That’s not to say that it isn’t scary, on the contrary it’s very unnerving and full of unsettling sights and choices, it’s just not up to scratch when those aspects try to go hand in hand. The gameplay remains tight and well structured and the visuals and design collectively serve up one intriguing experience, something that’s upheld further by excellent voice acting.
Mark Sherwood · Dec 10, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - SOMA offers a different kind of psychological horror experience: eschewing jump scares in favour of asking some probing questions about consciousness, identity, existentialism, and artificial intelligence. An effectively told, impressively presented, and immensely engrossing sci-fi mystery, SOMA proves that it's very much worth your time on Xbox One.
AJ Irwin · Dec 08, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - With intelligent story telling and beautiful imagery, SOMA pushes the boundaries of traditional survival horror in new, psychologically thrilling ways. PS4 framerate issues may cause minor frustration during critical moments, but any console-limited fans of this niche genre are urged to give it a shot, regardless.
Jason Eliason · Dec 20, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - SOMA is at its best when it’s challenging you on a philosophical level rather than on a mechanical one. As a horror game, SOMA feels old and archaic. It isn’t especially frightening or even satisfying to play, but the questions it raises are worth exploring and make it worthwhile regardless. It’s an adventure that will stay with you as you roll the fates of Simon and Catherine around in your head long after the credits have rolled. Due to the current state of the PS4 version, however, if you’re going to play SOMA, either wait to see if it gets patched or play it on PC instead.
Thomas Ella · Sep 26, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The best way I would describe SOMA’s gameplay is blunt and unintuitive. The overly methodical interactions, boring puzzles, frustrating stealth and the long stretches of walking through admittedly atmospheric areas, all make SOMA something I’d have rather watched than played. It feels like a story was written, a setting was created around it, and then a few gameplay elements were slapped on to keep the game from being a two hour walking simulator, but honestly I wish I had gotten two hours of a great story than about nine hours of performing menial tasks waiting to be rewarded with narrative.
Kyle Lawrence · Sep 23, 2015 Reviewed on PC, PS4Read full review - It taps in on things that are common ground for people, and some of these things are huge fears for people, and it serves to make this game so much scarier than Amnesia was. SOMA had the tools to come together to be something special, but like some of the AIs and machines in the game, it’s not quite a complete product, but still quite enjoyable nonetheless.
Scott Sullivan · Sep 22, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Even with a few odd quirks - you'll probably figure out SOMA's mysteries long before the clueless protagonist - this is an absolutely fantastic game. Frictional's latest title is a benchmark for the horror genre, and easily one of the best examples of video game storytelling this year. Whether you're a returning fan, or a horror newbie, SOMA deserves your immediate attention.
Marshall Lemon · Sep 22, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - If you're after more details from on what exactly is going on, stop looking. Your experience with Soma could easily be lessened, quite significantly, if you learn too much about the plot, who you play and what your goals are. The game's slowly-unfolding story, and the choices you live with, make the experience one that will stay with you for some time, the ending hitting all the right notes.
Tom Orry · Sep 22, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - SOMA is a game that can cause you to question your humanity, if only for a few moments. It’s just a shame that the HPL Engine 3 was not up-to-snuff for the PlayStation 4. Still, this is a great game to play, whether by yourself or with others watching, and considering a play time of around 12 hours, it’s a pretty good thriller for $30.
