  • Skylanders Imaginators delivers the most purposeful innovation to the wondrous toys-to-life series, but, beyond that, presents a gameplay experience that perhaps treads a little too closely to what has come before. That doesn’t mean that it is any less entertaining, but, somewhat ironically, the developers need to tap into their imagination to make the adventure more surprising to stand out.

  • Skylanders Imaginators doesn’t push the franchise forward or make any significant strides but it remains perfectly suited for kids and it’s a rock-solid addition to the Nintendo Switch launch lineup of games. The games touch screen capabilities and digital library are unquestionably cool features yet at the same time I feel like they are both underused.

  • For all its focus on customization, Skylanders Imaginators feels fairly paint-by-number. It makes some smart improvements, and its creation gimmick is oddly addictive despite some of its design drawbacks. Even so, this is the sixth entry in a long-running series, and it's showing its age. The level of customization in Imaginators is probably enough to tide over the hardcore Skylanders fans for a while, so perhaps it's time for Activision's rotating Skylanders studios to take a break and slow down.

  • Imaginators feels like the next logical step in the franchise while still maintaining support for the massive library of characters from all previous games. It gives Skylanders the perfect way to survive as the era of kids using games to craft their own heroes, stories, and experiences is upon us.

  • Yet another addition to the popular Skylanders series but the twist is you can create your own characters. Colourful, creative and great for kids

  • Even with a few uninspired stages, Skylanders Imaginators manages to nail the childlike whimsy of the beat-'em-up genre so many of us grew up with. It's still a blast with friends, and even more-so now that you can share your creations and tweak them together. The series has shown signs of slowing down in recent years here and there, but it's not done yet.

  • Skylanders Imaginators is rich with customisation options, and a genuine sense of fun makes this a brilliant addition to the series.

  • With a big cast of characters, colorful scenery, fairly clever joke writing, and pick-up and play gameplay, Skylanders: Imaginators feels like a playable Saturday morning cartoon where you can insert your own hero into the fray.

  • As much as I enjoyed playing as my own created character, the collector in me felt like something was missing. Part of what makes Skylanders great is the action figure element. A tube containing a glowing rock isn’t nearly as cool as a beautifully sculpted monster. The charm of seeing that character come to life is partially lost. Even with players receiving a wealth of rewards, Skylanders Imaginators feels somewhat uninspired.

  • Skylanders has now been around for six consecutive years and it doesn’t seem to show any signs of slowing down with Skylanders Imaginators. The core gameplay is still a lot of fun and the level of customization with the new Imaginators is quite impressive, but a few bonehead decisions like the locked battle classes on Creation Crystals and a lack of any major gameplay changes surrounding the actual Imaginators prevent Skylanders Imaginators from taking the series to the next level.
