  • When I finish off an enemy ship in Black Flag, time slows and the camera zooms in, allowing me to witness the magnificent brutality of powder stores exploding as masts snap like matchsticks. Skull and Bones can’t offer spectacle, because playing with time and camerawork might risk affecting another player’s experience. The result is something that’s dulled down to the point that everyone shares the same mediocrity, and I have to wonder what happened to this poor little project during the many years it was stuck on the seas of development hell.

  • Skull and Bones is a dull exercise in checklist progression, spiced here and there with some impressive sailing.

Skull & Bones isn’t a horrible game at all, but its not the game that we wanted. I mean all they had to do was just remove the assassin’s vs templar story from what they had with Black Flag and let us be pirates. I don’t know, I am just a black guy with a laptop and a big mouth; I am certain that game development is more difficult than all that. Skull & Bones offers some fun and often times thrilling combat, but the downtime and story in-between all that is just not interesting. This game is going to end up being another victim of chasing that ole dragon which is live service game success. Its not for every game, and hopefully, prayerfully developers will stop trying to attain this high and just set this fad out to sea.

  • Skull and Bones may have survived the turbulent seas of its long voyage to release, but the end result is a game that's barely kept afloat by its solid sailing mechanics, while the uninspiring content, underwhelming presentation, and poor multiplayer design punch far too many holes in the hull.

  • The world is indeed wide enough for Skull and Bones and the increasingly few pirate games out there. But be careful. It won't let you get comfy. And after a long time in production, there's still work to do before Skull and Bones is feature complete.

  • Ubisoft has got this genre of at the intersection of MMO and RPG right before, so it’s dumbfounding to see it miss so hard here. The game isn’t bad, it’s just painfully average. An unexceptional Ship of Theseus with no wind in its sails.

  • With an extensive roadmap for the year ahead – and with the proviso that the crowd of onlookers at Sainte-Anne continue to whoop and holler every time I make berth – I can, at least, see an eventual return to Skull and Bones on my horizon.

  • Skull and Bones might have been a better game had it released sooner, but at it's fun combat is dampened by its rather dull progression.
