  • Showgunners is opening the door to a whole new world of players looking for something less intimidating as a gateway into the tactical RPG space. It might not have enough meat on the bone to become your next obsession, but if you want to see meat carved from the bone in tactical bloodbaths, Showgunners is absolutely worth experiencing.

  • Showgunners doesn’t try to be XCOM, but it has moments where it’s slightly better than the game that started a genre. The game smartly combines turn-based combat and exploration elements to offer players a fresh take on a traditional formula. I didn’t play Showgunners like XCOM and had a lot of fun.

  • Showgunners has its fair share of new ideas, and it's best when it uses them. Moving around the world to find useful rewards adds an additional, relatively low-stress, layer to a solid tactics experience. Meeting new contestants and fans, who are varied, expands the world and those that live in it. Inside combat, a lot will feel familiar to tactics veterans, but fresh elements are at least complex enough to sustain a playthrough.

  • Overall, Showgunners is showing massive potential to shake things up in the turn-based strategy genre while maintaining a great story to keep you coming back. You’ll be made to think on your toes and sometimes outside the box, though this is also what makes it such a great game. The voice acting, visuals and general challenges in Showgunners pull it all together for a game that can appeal to everybody, making it well worth the time.

  • What makes Showgunners so addicting is that its combat is tight, responsive, fair, and accessible. The options available to players during combat and exploration are just enough to feel varied without feeling overly complicated; though the combat U.I. can get cluttered at times. This is the perfect game for players that are new to this genre or for veterans looking for a more casual experience that still provides enough of a challenge to stay interesting.

Quick and dirty, Showgunners is a turn-based strategy for people with short attention spans and a need for instant gratification. Shrinking the experience down robs you of the majesty of something like XCOM’s strategic brilliance, but you won’t regret the time you spend here.

  • In terms of the game’s functioning, Showgunners has very few technical hiccups. There will be the occasional visual stutter, but none of it is bad in any way and it shouldn’t distract. In addition, even if there were a frame rate dip, nothing can hurt you because you’ve now had the need for fast reflexes taken away from you. All combat is turn-based, so even if the frame rate became horrendous for a few seconds, it wouldn’t be an issue.

  • Since it is so straightforward it’s tempting to say that Showgunners is perfect for newcomers to strategy games, but while that may be true in the sense of learning the controls, and the gist of the gameplay, the overall experience is so lacking in nuance and variation it’s more likely to put you off than encourage you to seek out other, more refined examples of the genre.

  • In its looks and execution, Showgunners does what it set out to do and creates a turn-based love letter to the 90s, updating those themes for a modern audience, while still somehow not managing to lose authenticity. It’s a job well done and I’d much like to explore this universe further in the future.
