- With Shin Megami Tensei V, Atlus has done a solid job of updating the series over to the Nintendo Switch. The new gameplay elements are mostly welcome, and press turn combat and demon fusing elements are better than ever. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the story, which never even begins to get interesting.
Kirk Hiner · Dec 27, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - SMT V is a welcome return to home consoles for the series with an intriguing world to explore, filled with challenging encounters that are immensely satisfying to overcome.
Jae Lee · Dec 07, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It’s not the game I spent all this time thinking it would be, or afraid it might be, and it’s so much better for it. I’ve already poured an incredible amount of time into it, and this is just the first of many playthroughs. Multiple endings, multiple builds to try, and just the fun of running around a perfectly designed world with the best turn-based combat you can experience.
Thomas Medina · Nov 30, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Shin Megami Tensei V is a title we can easily recommend. This new installment in the SMT series is a phenomenal experience, and we loved seeing such a modern and polished Shin Megami Tensei experience. We loved the story, and even the open world had its many secrets and charms. The game also comes with great voice acting and a superb soundtrack and this title is also a testament to how good games can look on the Switch.
Ibuki · Nov 28, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Shin Megami Tensei V wants you to become a God, and throws everything it’s got at you to test your mettle. At times rebellious and stubborn, Atlus’ artisanal approach to RPG craft makes up for any shortcomings. Those possessed of a dedication to weather its sand-blasted, ruined world will uncover a treasure that’ll lodge in their minds like a revelation. This is hardcore role-playing at its most efficient, dressed up in a bleak, nihilistic story and given life by a compendium of demons that make Pokemon look amateurish. God only knows how a follow-up could top this.
Dom Peppiatt · Nov 25, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Its dangerous world is a pleasure to explore, and recruiting a small army of demons is shockingly addictive. Some may be disappointed by the lack of story scenes, but I enjoyed the fact that it just lets you get on with developing your party without any fluff; the focus here is on the journey.
Richard Seagrave · Nov 19, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Still, I can’t deny the feeling that washed over me as I saw the credits roll, especially after taking on a seemingly endless spawn of bosses to get there. I felt on top of the world, like I had earned the right to define it; I wish making the actual choice was a little more satisfying. Still, Shin Megami Tensei V makes smart improvements to its already strong core, creating an entertaining and rewarding journey I won’t soon forget.
Kimberley Wallace · Nov 11, 2021 Reviewed on Switch - Shin Megami Tensei 5 brings back the things that fans love about the series. Its biggest sin is that it doesn’t do much to innovate. Fans that were expecting to see a brand new vision for SMT will be confused because this is essentially the same demon collecting dungeon crawler it has always been.
Jason Faulkner · Nov 11, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Shin Megami Tensei V understands its roots in RPG combat, demonic friendships, and plotlines about toppling gods. This new entry takes advantage of the next generation of Nintendo console and improves vastly in look, feel, and in world exploration.
Andrew Stretch · Nov 10, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Minor graphical hiccups aside, Shin Megami Tensei V is an outstanding RPG, made all the more so by its countless improvements over its older siblings. It’s tough but enthralling, and brimming with style. More importantly, perhaps, it has great ideas executed to something near perfection.
