- Serious Sam is a lot of fun, issues and all. Not every game has to take the gamer on an epic journey, emotional or otherwise sometimes just having enough baddies to blast and a good one liner is enough. And like I said in the outset of this review I regret waiting so long to jump into this franchise. Even with the issues that I experienced, and I promise you there was many, I still can only think of one word to adequately express what I think of Serious Sam 4… Fun. Serious Sam 4 is just fun, and in a time where real life is so very serious its nice to have a game just be fun again.
Terrence Johnson · Jan 11, 2022 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Serious Sam 4 almost had me with its fast gunplay and over the top action, but a reliance on sheer, overwhelming numbers and repetition meant that I began to get bored and frustrated far too quickly.
Jamie Collyer · Dec 30, 2021 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - The modern setting and slightly more serious tone take away some of the goofy cartoonish fun, something we’ve already seen in Serious Sam 3: BFE, but the action remains fast and exciting, with melee attacks and sprint adding an extra layer of modernity that works out well in the formula.
Győző Baki · Dec 27, 2021 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - For those who want a brutally raw retro-styled shooter where constant carnage is the order of the day, Serious Sam 4 will sate the bloodlust of even the most maniacal gamers. Not only that, but it’s genuinely funny and well-written, and the trials and tragedies Sam experiences tugged at my jaded heartstrings far more than I expected them to. Many would not enjoy Serious Sam 4 because gunning down endless waves of slavering aliens and mutants becomes brutally relentless – but if you’re a hardcore shooter purist, that’s exactly what you’re looking for.
Jonathan Trussler · Dec 26, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Serious Sam 4 is good, mindless fun, that is unfortunately mired by performance issues. This is recommended for big fans of the series, or for those looking for a nostalgia fix, for back when games were simpler, linear affairs which could be completed in a weekend. It’s not a particularly great-looking or running game, but it is also only $39.99 at launch. The full campaign doesn’t overstay its welcome, and its many secrets will tempt completionists. Give it a shot if you like your bloody kills combined with quippy one-liners. Just be ready for a bumpy ride.
Paulmichael Contreras · Dec 21, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Playing Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass can be fun. It’s also clear that the franchise is at a crossroads. It wants to steal from other AAA shooters, to have believable characters, NPCs, and a story. At the same time, it goes all-in with a lame-joke cracking juvenile in a man suit and gameplay that is rote, lacks creativity and is repetitive. Long load times and framerate issues don’t help, either. Twenty years on, Sam isn’t edgy, goofy or ironic. Sam’s schtick, and the gameplay that goes with him, are seriously due for a makeover.
Mark Steighner · Dec 17, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Sadly, as expected, this PS5 version of Serious Sam was a disappointment. There is a really fun shooter buried underneath this pile of glitches, framerate issues and boring story-driven sections, but it’s nigh impossible to overlook all of those setbacks. If you really want to have some dumb fun with our favorite thrift shop Duke Nukem impersonator, there is a much better option out in the wild.
Leo Faria · Dec 15, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Serious Sam 4 is a bare-bones first-person shooter that has its moments. The epic boss encounters and comedic writing does have some appeal but gameplay-wise the title feels archaic. Even titles that utilize classic systems have some appeal to them to help stand out but Serious Sam 4 doesn't have anything truly unique or exciting about it.
Grayshadow · Dec 13, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Sam 4 disappoints as both a sequel and a next-gen product. While it wasn’t particularly optimised on PC it still represents a low for PS5 performance. A compromised port of a game that’s only slightly above average in the first place. A serious shame.
Stuart Gipp · Dec 13, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Serious Sam 4 on consoles is a beautifully fun mess. It’s more Serious Sam, which isn’t a bad thing, but there are performance problems that cannot be overlooked.

About the game
Trailers & Screenshots:
Another major installment in the series of brutal and bloody shooters developed by the Croatian Croteam studio. The story of this part is set before the events of the third installment, in which Sam had to face the forces of the main antagonist - Mental in a futuristic, virtual version of ancient Egypt. Mental's goal was, obviously, to take over the Earth. However, the story in this new installment seems to be a bit more mature. In terms of gameplay, Serious Sam 4 remains faithful to the core mechanics of the series - the player once again eliminates entire hordes of enemies using a wide array of diversified weapons. What has changed however, is the approach to the players, who are now given significantly more freedom and huge open maps where even more dark creatures await them. When it comes to technology, the game is powered by Serious Engine 4, the improved version of the original, accompanied by motion capture and photogrammetry technologies.
