  • Secret World Legends is far from perfect, but it's certainly captivating. With storytelling unsurpassed in the MMO genre, it features some incredibly compelling narrative and development, set in an atmospheric world. It isn't without its problems, with a dull at best combat system and irritating limitation on the number of quests you can carry. If you're looking for a unique and interesting story, this is the game for you, so long as you can live with some flaws.

  • The Secret World is admirable for attempting to inject much-needed originality and life into MMORPGs, but while its fiction and theme succeed, its mostly derivative questing and stale combat fail to justify the steep time investment. Funcom is committed to The Secret World and will undoubtedly make many changes and improvements over the coming months and years. ...Given time, The Secret World will only get cheaper - and better.

  • The bottom line is that TSW is a very good game right now and is a great game in the making. ...Add in a dedicated team of developers anxious to make it the go-to MMO for players and you have a surefire recipe for success. ...I firmly believe that The Secret World, like a fine wine, is one of those rare MMOs that will only improve with time and attention, something that Funcom is clearly prepared to do.

  • The Secret World shows a lot of ambition. The story is engaging, the setting atmospheric and the user-friendly core systems are a welcome progression. ...But it still feels uncomfortably shackled to familiar MMO compromises, and you'll spend much of your time trudging through the same tiresome genre filler: the padding of content and lackluster combat are both things done better by other games in the genre. That it's still worth a look is testament to the quality of what it does get right.

The Secret World flirts with brilliance and – at least, during earlier zones – looks primed to seal the deal. But, as time goes on, its its seemingly bottomless bag of tricks starts to look a bit shallow. The story, world, skill system, and investigation missions definitely do their damndest to rewrite the MMO rulebook, but uninspired combat, ho-hum PVP, uninteresting late-game quests, and general clunkiness keep TSW's smartest innovations from truly shining.

  • The Secret World does best when it focuses on experimentation overlaying its MMO groundwork. Its mainstream, postmodern pastiche of gaming and nerd culture that ranges from John Landis and Edgar Allen Poe to alternate reality gaming is a welcome respite against the backdrop of Blizzard and BioWare. But The Secret World's successes have little to do with the MMO essentials, and though its trappings are unique and sometimes powerful, its core is undeveloped.

  • The word artifice often has a negative connotation. Here, it’s the careful, thoughtful deception that makes The Secret World stand out. The vainglorious plot and meticulous landscapes of cliché will draw you in place of base compulsions to hit a level cap or maximize a “gearscore.” If you can stomach the horrors of the night, as well as rote combat and occasionally glitched gameplay, you might just be the perfect pledge for this secret society.

  • The Secret World delivers an excellent MMO experience with a flexible character design system and challenging puzzle quests, and is only hampered by weak PvP and a lack of replay value. Whether you're new to MMOs or have been playing them for years, there are not many reasons not to give its Lovecraftian mysteries and global conspiracies a chance.

  • And so The Secret World isn't a game for those craving a quick and satisfying player battle. Instead, it's for those who seek uninviting crevasses and insidious conspiracies. It's for those who want their intelligence challenged--not to mindlessly battle monsters lifted from the Book of Generic Fantasy Creatures. ...The Secret World requires you to dig more deeply than you might have expected. But when you do, you find a fascinating game willing to divulge its secrets to anyone ready to listen.

  • As it stands now, The Secret World stands little chance as a subscription-based game when similar products offer so much more. ...Lastly, the quests are far too inconsistent with investigation and platforming rising well above the majority of other quests which at times are downright dreadful. The Secret World is a title that may have made a splash five years ago. Now it’s just another archaic MMO looking to fit in.
