  • If you have a group of friends who are also willing to take the risk with you, you could certainly glean a lot of enjoyment out of the game, but it’s unlikely that you’ll still be playing it a couple of months down the line.

  • Secret Ponchos: Most Wanted Edition is the thinking man’s western shooter. By placing equal emphasis on tactics as well as smarts, they have created the exciting addictive multiplayer title that it always could have been. Instead of doing a quickie port to try to get more scratch, attention was paid to the details needed to bring this up to the level it deserves. Like The Man with No Name, Secret Ponchos took one to the chest. With bravado, it stands up, reveals the furnace door beneath and is ready for the real duel to begin.

  • Secret Ponchos feels like a glimpse of what could go on to be a great game. Its comic book art style looks good, and the actual game plays well – but the slim roster of characters and stages mean that you’ll quickly burn through what’s on offer. With only alternative costumes available to buy at launch, the hope is that more content will be added further down the line.

  • Since it encourages replay through one fighter over a long period, it's not the small roster that limits Secret Ponchos' appeal but rather its passable selection of maps and modes. Yet Secret Ponchos is well worth falling for, if only because playing as The Killer and using cover for a speedy reload is the closest a game has ever come to depicting the first Metal Gear Solid boss fight from Revolver Ocelot's perspective.

  • No one wants to play a laggy, imbalanced, and punitive multiplayer-only game, even if it's free. Unless Switchblade Monkeys' planned content updates can iron out the kinks and add more compelling modes to boost the mediocre gameplay, you're better off leaving Secret Ponchos to the tumbleweeds.

  • The setting, art style, sound design, and balanced characters in a unique gameplay style make this game a really great game to own. I love when games seem to walk into my life and satisfy some gaming desire I didn’t know I had. Secret Ponchos is a refined, intricate twin-stick shooter rooted in the Old West that, for those who enjoy simple, yet tactical, online battles, will stand on its own for a time to come.

Abnormally complex and pretty for a twin-stick arena shooter, Secret Ponchos throws you into the deep end and demands you figure things out for yourself, usually while under heavy fire. Stick it out, however, and the real fun starts to shine through. While the experience is hamstrung by glitches and a general lack of content, there are enough rewarding opportunities for discovery and creative strategy here to keep determined players entertained for at least a few days.

  • The bottom line though is that the actual combat is fun, and if you're itching for a competitive shooter this will satisfy you. I've been playing for hours at a time in some heated sessions, and nearly every game has a "wow!" moment. After playing each character and learning their counters it gets even better. The deep mechanics simply allow for memorable gunfights to happen constantly, and if the developers can keep the community from jettisoning they will have a minor hit on their hands.

About the game

Create your outlaw from a dynamic set of western characters, each with its own weapon types and different combat styles. As you gun down other players you will define your legacy as you increase your notoriety with each kill. But watch out – as the price on your head increases, it becomes a more valuable target, and others will be gunning for you in this Wild West setting. In a nutshell Secret Ponchos is an isometric action-based PvP fighting game, taking place in a stylish Spaghetti Western universe.
