- The use of various offensive elements that can be combined is great, while the gadgets generally are good to use as well. Wrapped up in a world that feels vast without actually being too big, this is a solid title for those looking for a little challenge over the course of a few evenings.
Jamie Collyer · Mar 28, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Scars Above is an interesting experience for all the wrong reasons, my feelings upon finishing the title a mixture of disappointment and frustration. It’s easy to see what Mad Head Games were going for here, and the foundation for a more fleshed out experience is alive and well within the game as it currently stands.
Community Guest Writer · Mar 13, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Scars Above is unfortunately bland, with dull combat and very few puzzles. It has hints at interesting ideas and ambitions, but couldn’t execute on those.
David Flynn · Mar 04, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall, Scars Above just can’t rise above its AA roots. This translates to some cut-rate animations, character models, and environments. The game’s primary weapon is good enough, as is the story and combat. But just being adequate is a tough sell. It’s hard to imagine Scars Above moving to the front of the Soulslike line.
Mark Steighner · Mar 03, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Scars Above tried to make its place by adding twists onto well know mechanics, but tragically falls just short. While it does bring many new and interesting ideas to the table, it is hard to notice them when none of the other mechanics seem to work well together.
J.T. Isenhour · Mar 02, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Scars Above has some promising ideas for a much deeper sci-fi action game, but not all were fully utilized. While it aims to be a Souls game, it ultimately comes out mostly as a decent third-person shooter. It's true that the game isn't perfect and has its share of drawbacks; still, it manages to differentiate itself from the crowd of soulslike games by introducing some fresh concepts.
Rayan · Mar 02, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Indeed, Scars Above seems to have borrowed traits from several games that all combine well to make Scars Above and enjoyable experience. This mixture of simple puzzle-solving and light combat may not suit everyone, but I certainly enjoyed crafting weapons and gadgets that helped bring down the Custodian.
William Thompson · Mar 01, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There's not a lot here that's exceptional, and there's not a lot here that noteworthy in its failure. Scars Above is about as middle of the road as it gets, a direct-to-video adventure in an age of cinematic, expansive blockbusters.
Alex Santa Maria · Feb 28, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Scars Above impressed me and it left me satisfied in the end. I’m glad it didn’t just try to be Returnal or a straight roguelite, and instead had its own unique ideas on how to take on bosses and puzzles. There are some flaws here, but I think that is due mostly to a smaller team and it being an AA game.
Jordan Hawes · Feb 28, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - The game fails in too many ways as a third-person shooter but does pass as an adventure with light puzzle-solving. Ultimately, it feels like a mixing pot of systems that don’t work together, but that challenge may be enough for some players to see through to the end.
