  • Saturnalia is a showcase of indie creativity at its best. With beautiful visuals and an even better soundtrack, it’s not a bad way to spend a few hours.

  • Playing through Saturnalia's beautiful mixture of rogue-lite, survival horror, and Metroidvania mechanics feels like being among the first people in the world to experience peanut butter and chocolate.

  • Saturnalia tells the story of four unlikely allies during the festival of St. Lucia. Together, they must solve both a disappearance and find the identity of the creature that stalks them.

  • Saturnalia is a refreshing entry in the survival horror genre thanks to how willing it is to welcome players of all backgrounds, and how well-designed its core gameplay elements are. Gravoi never feels safe and there always seems to be something lurking in the shadows, even before you become acquainted with The Creature.

  • Saturnalia isn’t a long game; you can complete the whole thing in a dozen hours, and often fewer, depending on how you play, but it’s a memorable experience nonetheless. It uses horror in smart ways to explore social topics – the town’s isolation, resistance to change and to outsiders, and the ugly social beliefs that those things inform.

  • Ultimately, Saturnalia is hard to call a must-play horror game, as it's likely to be polarizing both in terms of its presentation and its mechanics. A slower pace, somewhat minimalist gameplay, and mystery-laden narrative style will keep it from being everyone's cup of tea.

  • An intriguing little game with a great setting and aesthetic, well worth experiencing blind.

  • One of the most visually interesting video games of the year but also a survival horror that’s not quite scary enough to reach its full potential.

  • Saturnalia is a truly original survival horror game. It’s almost an arthouse game in which the narrative and characters are brilliant, even with the claustrophobic location. The creature is terrifying, the world alien and unusual and the horror theme great. It does feel a bit relentless and occasionally a drudge – and personally I got motion sickness – but on the whole Saturnalia is a brilliant game that survival horror fans should lap up.

  • Ultimately, Saturnalia is one unique horror experience where the developer's own use of limited resources combine to create something compelling and unique.

About the game

A third-person roguelite horror adventure where you play as four characters, experiencing an intergenerational storyline tied to the haunting traditions of an ancient village in Sardinia, Italy, a region rich with unique folklore… The village itself is an elaborate maze with no two iterations being precisely the same—you will have to explore and solve the mysteries of the game largely unguided. Die, and watch the village reconfigure itself into a new form. Solve puzzles and open shortcuts to new areas with tools and items you find along the way, unlocking every piece of the story with different characters, each with its own power and suited for another aspect of exploration and investigation.
