  • I could never call it good, or imaginative, or varied. I can see through its obvious attempts to appeal to my most primitive impulses. But I can also say that Ryse succeeds in tickling your brain stem even when you know your time is better spent. I don't believe, however, that it deserves congratulations for having done it.

  • It may contain higher resolutions and a more flexible frame rate, but otherwise it’s substantially the same game. ...The multiplayer actually shows off the mechanics better than the main campaign, but it would have benefited having more than one additional gladiator companion. Ryse: Son of Rome has the visual fidelity of the future, while its gameplay and storytelling are stuck in the past.

  • I'm also annoyed that Ryse is more inspired by God of War than history. ...Roman history was amazing enough as it is. There's no need for impossibly intricate armor, transforming coliseums, and a story that dips into the supernatural. It's meant to give it the appearance of an ambitious, epic tale, but it just makes all its limitations that much more obvious and sad.

  • Ryse is a decent game, given its length, but it's one that is certainly more fun to look at than it is to play. If you're looking for a game that will push your gaming hardware to the limit, then Ryse certainly fits, especially if you're itching to game on 4K hardware. Otherwise, there are better ways to pass the time.

The game doesn’t have too many pluses, but that doesn’t make it a bad experience. Ryse is a title that should be played when you have nothing else to play or are bored with what you do have. But I do not recommend sitting down and playing this from start to finish in one swoop – which you can do, it is only about nine hours – as you will get bored relatively quickly and often.

  • Ryse: Son of Rome is a game that was designed to show what the Xbox One can do, and boy does it show off the power of Microsoft’s new console. The visual and sound presentation is amazing while the story is engaging and something worth watching. Unfortunately, where the game has some issues is in its fundamental gameplay, as many will find the combat becomes repetitive, the QTE executions cannot fail, and the overall gameplay length is short.

  • Ryse is an absolutely beautiful game, but all the beauty in the world can't make up for repetitive gameplay that will most likely bore the average gamer, even those who like hack-and-slash. The game is honestly kind of a guilty pleasure for me, but I know I'm a bit of rarity. The realistic portrayals of Roman combat satisfy me, and I greatly enjoy finding the proper combinations to smacking around Britons into execution mode.

  • In an industry that is quickly becoming reliant on established ideas, Ryse: Son of Rome is a daring, if faltering, move to deliver something new. It may not find its mark, but a sequel that improves upon the broader criticisms could see Crytek on to something truly special.

  • We must say that Ryse offers no long-lasting value, it is definitely a renter at best, but it is a beautiful one. Once you complete Marius’ story mode in about five to six hours and try out the co-op multiplayer once or twice, there isn’t much else to it. Ryse does an excellent job at showcasing the capabilities of the Xbox One itself, but it lacks any real substance. ...Its gameplay is repetitive from beginning to end and the entire adventure felt like one big, glorified quick-time event.

  • Unfortunately that combat system remains underdeveloped as the game goes on, and as a result, the game becomes a repetitive trudge through its brief 6 hour campaign. There are some bright spots, such as a great story and unparalleled presentation among next gen launch titles, but those bright spots don’t save what is ultimately a repetitive and shamefully greedy launch title for the Xbox One.
