- In the end, Root Letter isn't quite the complete package, let down by some issues with storytelling and character development. In spite of this, it's an enjoyable journey with some gorgeous presentation and something I'd easily recommend for fans of visual novels.
Kresnik · Dec 01, 2016 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Less-discerning players with a tolerance for bad localizations, or maybe Matsue residents, will find a pleasant diversion in Root Letter, but for everyone else, it's difficult to recommend, especially at its current price tag.
Josh Tolentino · Nov 23, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Root Letter is a strange visual novel, but one that keeps players interested throughout. If you feel you’ve received a rather lackluster ending then that’s cause to play through four more times to uncover the final truth. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t make expedite subsequent playthroughs. Still, there is a lot to like about a visual novel focused on the lives of thirty somethings rather than samey love-struck teenagers. Hopefully future games in the Kadokawa Game Mystery series improve upon this first one.
Marcus Estrada · Nov 14, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Root Letter wasn’t the most mind-blowing experience that I’ve ever had with a visual novel, but it was definitely solid overall. If you’re looking for something super-exciting, this game might not be the one for you. If, however, you want an enjoyable story with a great setting, solid cast of characters, and an amount of intrigue that is neither too heavy nor too light than I would definitely check this one out.
Kenny McKee · Nov 11, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - √Root Letter has many interesting ideas, but they never fully gel together at the end. I had high hopes after the first couple of hours of gameplay, but it was hard to continue after determining I did not like Max at all. It was even harder to like it after learning who Aya was. Perhaps the multiple endings do make it all easier to swallow and there is something mind-blowing within, but I doubt many will feel enticed to replay to find out.
Keri Honea · Nov 10, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The combination of a very strong and intriguing story, interesting characters, a very well-conceived mystery stacked into many different layers, enjoyable investigative gameplay, and the charm of the faithful portrayal of Matsue, make of Root Letter a little hidden gem that fans of the genre shouldn’t miss.
Giuseppe Nelva · Oct 31, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Root Letter is great for anyone that loves a good mystery. Obviously it’s not action-packed – this is a visual novel after all – but just like a good book it keeps you on tenterhooks from beginning to end, eager to find out exactly what happened all those years ago and the implications it may have in the present day. Those looking for a Phoenix Wright-style experience on PS4 should look no further – Root Letter scratches the itch whilst also presenting a more compelling and mature story.
Rich · Oct 28, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - With no real gameplay required, this is, at the end of the day, a visual novel that works well at times, though some head scratching moments disrupts the flow of the game.
Josh Di Falco · Feb 15, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Root Letter feels like a visual novel plus with its focus on choice and freedom being as foregrounded as the story itself. Well written and beautifully presented, you’ll struggle to find a story more engaging. It’s a shame there wasn’t more choice or alternative approaches to investigations but at the end of the day, if you’re playing a game of this genre, you’ll be playing it for their story, not your own.
Dom D'Angelillo · Dec 19, 2016 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Overall, Root Letter is a nice addition to the visual novel genre with gorgeous graphics and a novel storyline.
