  • Overall, the visuals were appealing. The colors were crisp and the character and background designs were well done. This isn’t the worst dating sim I’ve played but it’s also not the best. I still had a good time with it though.

  • On the other hand, there’s a Saved By the Bell/High-School Musical positivity that drags the whole thing forward, and I can assure you that you’ll grow to love this confectionery box of stereotypes. It’s closer to the worst visual novel than it is the best, but it gets marks for ‘working out’, as it at least tries new things. Just don’t pick Max, I beg you.

  • Roommates as a visual novel is lighthearted and those considering a purchase should be aware of this. Anyone looking to relax with a cheery title with a satisfactory story and amusing characters should consider this game. Players have many options and the game has solid replay value. Roommates provides levity but it ultimately comes at the cost of being engaging.

  • Roommates on the Xbox One does feel like you are playing through a teen/young adult sitcom, but that comes with all the negative tropes around that too – unlikable characters, cheap laughs, and not likely to stay with you after completion. It has two playable characters with multiple romance options each to encourage replayability, but each playthrough will be identical, even between characters.
