- Over the last few decades, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series has established itself as one of the mainstays in the grand strategy genre. Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 reaffirms that reputation by delivering a solid and engaging game that you can easily sink a ton of time into. Of course, being a remake, the game has already proven its worth in the past, but it’s great to see just how well it holds up without the bells and whistles that more recent entries have added. The visual presentation is a bit of a letdown, and we’d have preferred Chinese voice acting, but ultimately, this is definitely a game worth checking out if you’re a fan of the genre.

The worst thing about it is the omission of multiplayer. If you don't mind that, you have a meaty strategy game with over 1,000 playable officers and more scenarios than you can possibly ever want.

Avec une base solide, des fonctionnalités améliorées et revues, et une telle richesse globale, sans oublier les tales qui nous laissent la main sur notre progression, ce sont des heures et des heures de jeu qui nous attendent. A condition de ne pas être effrayé par un panel si riche de fonctionnalités et surtout de maîtriser l’anglais, car Romance of the Three Kingdoms étant très bavard, il est impératif d’assimiler chacune des composantes pour profiter pleinement du voyage.

It can be initially overwhelming and a little unwieldy at times, but the remake offers a return to a seminal entry in the series and one of the deepest and most intricate strategy games available on PS5 and PS4 to date.

Thanks to the “Tales” feature it’s possibly the most accessible RoTK game to date, easing players in by giving them a clear set of targets to prioritise. Once you’re comfortable with that the depth of strategy and a staggering array of ways to play make for a deep experience with dozens upon dozens of historical play. I still find it odd that Koei Tecmo decided to remake this game, but ultimately I’m glad that it happened.

(Romance of the Three Kingdoms 10 still holds that dear spot for me.) But while the Tales event triggers are a highlight, a number of glaring issues in its localization make it rather difficult to recommend this game over the prior entries unless you can play the game in its original Japanese build.

Unfortunately, its gameplay has not withstood the test of time. Built upon an engaging turn-based gameplay loop, this game quickly becomes repetitive—even tedious—because it plays the same scenes over and over. Compared to the variety of events in modern grand strategy games, it's difficult to recommend this one. However, if you're a history enthusiast or a Dynasty Warriors fan curious about the strategy genre, this game may be for you.
