  • Overall, this is a pick-up and go type of addition for the Nintendo Switch. It’s available on other platforms, but most gamers will find it’s best on the go. Strong artwork, mechanics, and cleanliness of the title make it extremely polished, but the lack of depth made it hard for me to want to put any more than a couple hours into Rogue Aces.

  • Rogue Aces does a fine job of balancing randomness and giving agency over the flights, and it definitely doesn’t deserve to be buried by the wave of eShop releases every week.

  • Rogue Aces is an absolute treat. The gameplay is addicting, the visuals have a surprisingly deep level of detail to them, the controls are solid and fully customizable, and there are enough game modes to keep things interesting. If I had to find any real fault to the game, I’d say the lack of multiplayer would be my biggest disappointment. Clear off the Switch’s runway, and bring Rogue Aces in for a landing – this is one game that deserves a place in your library.

  • Rogue Aces’ levels may be procedurally generated but that doesn’t automatically make them interesting. Rogue Aces can be an entertaining blast and is sufficiently different from the competition to be worth a look. But its repetitive nature does it no favours and means it’s best taken in small doses.

  • Rogue Aces is an excellent little game that works incredibly well however way you play it. The quick, convenient menu system ensures you snap right back into the action for some sweet on the go gaming. I would love to see a split-screen multiplayer added at some point as it’s clearly begging for it, but as a solid, satisfying solo-focused shooter that’s only 123MB in size, it is a Nintendo Switch necessity that will barely make a dent in your storage.

  • Meshing together the repeat play appeal of the Roguelike game category with a fun light-hearted take on airborne dogfight warfare, Rogue Aces is a joy to play and comes packed with a great deal of content. Newcomers to the genre will find some turbulence in adapting, and the multiplayer potential of the game's setup both online and off isn't realised at all. But for pure arcade fighter jet action on Switch, few games are more enjoyable.

  • Arcadey, exciting, and responsive, Rogue Aces is an incredibly smooth take on dogfighting, with plenty of charm to spare. While the procedurally-generated campaign does leave much to be desired in the way of level and mission design, the core gameplay loop is solid and the missions themselves emphasise the action more than anything else, keeping consecutive playthroughs engaging.

  • There’s little doubt about it, Rogue Aces is a very enjoyable game, and one of the best and most entertaining Switch games within its price range. Controls are hard to master to begin with, and impatient gamers will need to be more lenient with this game and give it time. If you do allow it time, then Rogue Aces rewards you with high-octane thrills and spills from start to finish.

  • If you can look past some uninspired visuals, you might find yourself having a lot of fun with Rogue Aces — particularly if you're a fan of games like Wings of Fury or, more recently, Luftrausers. Its rogue-like randomness works in small doses, and its wide variety of modes keeps things crisp. Will it find its way into your regular rotation? Probably not. However, in the words of Mike Daw, Creative Director at Infinite State Games, "Its short, frenetic levels are great if you’ve got a spare 5, 15 or even 50 minutes."

  • Perhaps including different pilots with varying skills might have made opened up interesting paths, lending the title some variation in play style or mechanics. While the actual combat is appealing, after time the inherent samey-ness ends up asking too much of the player. It wasn't long before I was pining for another game to play.

    About the game

3 planes left in your whole squadron, and you’re the only pilot. Just pop out and win a war for us would you, old chap? In Rogue Aces, you’ll battle for air, sea and ground supremacy while gradually upgrading your precious aircraft’s stats. Rogue Aces is about hot acrobatic dogfights, heroic mid-air plane-jacking, sweet fully destructible buildings and different-every-game procedural landscape and mission generation shizzle. Just don’t leave it too late to deploy that parachute, what what?
