Road Redemption isn’t what I hoped it would be, and that may not be entirely the game’s fault. Nostalgia can be a cruel mistress. However, the flaws on show here do prevent the game from standing up on its own, and although it can be fun and engaging sometimes, I would recommend waiting for a price drop before picking it up.

  • The core loop that made Road Rash such a classic is just about present here. However, it doesn’t come without problems. Whilst it’s fun to have a vehicular duel as you tear along the road, such weightless impact, its floaty physics, and the heavy reliance on randomly generated tracks and objectives, massively pulls the game short in the long run. The foundation is on the right track, but it definitely needed more time in the oven.

  • You don’t necessarily need to be into racing games to enjoy this game. Anyone can pick up and play and they will likely have a good time. It’s a simple game but it’s mindless fun right from the outset. It could perhaps do with a little more polishing in some respects, but for £17.99/$19.99 on the eShop, Road Redemption is an arcade-style throwback which is easy and enjoyable to play.

  • It’s fun for awhile but the thrills soon peter out as the scope of combat feels so locked down and restrained compared to what you can do in other games. The inherent limitations of the overall game concept really stand out and the one trick pony nature of a Road Rash game just doesn’t fly today.

  • A lot of the most interesting parts of the game -- like how repeatable it all is, how and when you should buy items, and what the general flow of gameplay is supposed to be -- are just overlooked. I just kind of figured out all that through trial and error because I was reviewing it; if I'd bought the game on a whim or got it for a gift I'm not sure I'd have had the patience to wait for things to click.

  • While Road Redemption is far from perfect, it taps the popular rogue-lite experience to create an enjoyable spiritual successor to Road Rash. It’s very rough around the edges, but the cost of entry is on the lower side of things. If you’re itching for that classic motorcycle brawler experience, it's more than worth the purchase.

  • Road Redemption delivers exactly what it promises – an accurate recreation of decades-old racing games that maybe weren’t all that hot to begin with. If you legitimately love and have continued to play Road Rash all these years, by all means, give Road Redemption a shot. You’ll probably enjoy it. If the 16-bit era was before your time, or you haven’t touched Road Rash since you returned it to Blockbuster Video in 1993, be prepared for a bumpy ride.

  • These issues pepper an otherwise great game which has somehow flipped the racing genre on its head. It can become a bit of a grind at times, striving to grab that next upgrade which will make your life a little easier. But when it works, it clicks into place and offers something more than so many racing games on the market. It’s an ideal game to dip in and out of through handheld as races don’t take long and you won’t lose any skill from taking a brief break. With a little patience, Road Redemption is a hell of a ride.

  • Road Redemption isn’t bad, but it doesn’t quite live up to its inspiration thanks to its unpolished design and repetitive gameplay. With little variety spread throughout the game’s often buggy campaign, it’s hard to imagine most players coming back for more than a few quick and dirty races after spending a few hours with the game. Cooperative play does help some, but after you’ve burned through the game’s 16 missions there’s little reason to come back for more. If you’re desperate to scratch that Road Rash itch, Road Redemption might give you some slight satisfaction. Just know that there are better combat racers out there.

  • While Road Redemption succeeds in a few ways, there are a lot of ways it doesn’t excel. A repetitive campaign, lackluster online play, and difficult progression outweigh the simple quick play mode. Road Redemption may be fun for a short period of time, but it’s not something I will find myself going back to play. It’s not a bad game, it just doesn’t stand out among the array of options available.
