  • Road Not Taken is chock full of cool and clever puzzle ideas that make playing it feel overly complicated and needlessly cruel. Even if you were up for the challenge though, there are some significant technical issues that keep the game from being enjoyable. It's a shame, really.

  • I can definitely see why Road Not Taken has endeared itself to so many people. It’s stylish, cute, somewhat dark and serious, clever, challenging, and very rewarding when you manage to rescue everyone in a year. It’s just a shame that the control hiccups and difficulty spikes tend to get in the way of all the good stuff. If you’re a fan of puzzle games, it’s still very much worth checking out despite these occasional frustrations.

  • The only real drawback is that it can be a bit tedious to swipe to move each square on the board, and there can be some miss taps when trying to grab and throw items. That set-up fits with the standard Zen puzzle idea, but is more frustrating when trying the timed mode. Road Not Taken delivers an engaging puzzle style with a compelling adventure set-up that is well worth picking up.

  • I highly recommend checking out Road Not Taken if you are a fan of Spry Fox, or just like roguelike puzzle games in general.

  • Road Not Take provides a heartfelt take on an old style of gameplay that we’re glad to see return in the modern era. ...On top of this, the game-stopping glitches we encountered should not have been an issue for a game this light on the PS4 hardware. Nevertheless, Road Not Taken is still a solid, if unspectacular puzzler on its own.

  • Slowly, bit by bit, I started having a little less fun as the levels progressed, as the game's initial intrigue wore off a little more. That's not to say it eventually becomes unplayable as I did enjoy the majority of the game, but make sure to bring extra patience along with you on this trip through the beaten path.

  • Road Not Taken proved to be a very unique game for its genre, or genres actually. The interesting marriage of what could feel like a mobile title, with the punishing difficulty and creative narrative of a console indie makes Road Not Taken a great game to have in your PS4 library.

  • It’s a testament to Road Not Taken’s creepy little world that I’m so willing to continue the search, and to its gameplay and style that each foray remains rewarding.

Every move must be thought through, and the game certainly rewards investment. That such a simple formula can be infused with such depth is impressive. The combination of the small decisions and details that go into tackling each level, alongside the grander themes of opportunities gained and lost, is a quality that makes Road Not Taken a cut above most puzzle games.

  • Taken on its own merits, however, it offers an enjoyable ride for the five to ten hours that it lasts. Niggling performance issues aside, it’s hard not to enjoy being the star of your very own fairy tale world – even if that fictional realm has a particularly odd approach to infant safety.
