- As a commentary on artificial intelligence, and as a science-fiction mystery tale, Return to Grace is a thought-provoking experiment. The questions it asks are compelling, the virtual characters it introduces are endearing, and the retro-futuristic world it proposes is rich in potential. As a first-person adventure game, however, it's less successful, due to perfunctory puzzles, undemanding gameplay, and a short running time. As a result, it's primarily for folks who want to spend less time overcoming obstacles and more time vibing with a good story.
Evan Norris · Mar 07, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - In the end, Return to Grace is closer to fantasy in a sci-fi setting, with a good dose of gentle humor, bright character, and even superbly voiced characters with simple gameplay. The most pleasant thing is to spend the evening without straining.
Brau3er · Jul 10, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Return to Grace is very much story-driven. There are some puzzles, and you can ‘hack’ items around you, but apart from that, there’s not much to do. It’s more a walking simulator than anything, and I don’t mind that at all, but because of your limited abilities, it can get a little repetitive at points.
Tessa Kaur · Jun 13, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - As is generally the case with walking simulators, traditional gameplay is extremely limited. Most of the game is simply walking through an area, exploring some rooms or buildings, listening to dialogue, and moving on as the story progresses. However, there are a few pattern-based puzzles that unlock doors (however, they're skippable), one quick segment with a flamethrower (the only weapon in the game, and it's not used for combat), and a few balance beam segments.
Quinn Levandoski · Jun 11, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Grace is a solid narrative game set in a wondrous sci-fi location. The core plot will be enough to drive many players for its short run time, especially given its unique setting and visual design. Over time this might lose a little of its luster, but the secrets here are certainly worth uncovering.
Rob Gordon · May 30, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Return to Grace is an immersive narrative experience that shines when it comes to character interactions. The cast of Artificial Intelligence constructs is varied, fun, and challenges players to re-evaluate their approach and priorities. They are also beautifully voiced, as is the main character Adie. The story is also captivating, although some sections toward the conclusion feel rushed.
Andrei Dumitrescu · May 30, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall, I can recommend Return to Grace confidently. If you like walking simulators and the story is intriguing to you, then there isn't a reason not to pick it up; I was satisfied with the ending, and I immediately booted up a second playthrough to see how I could affect it.
Artura Dawn · May 30, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - A short and sweet experiential exploration game, Return To Grace embraces a 60s art style, interesting story and a relaxed approach to gameplay. Unfortunately, the lack of gameplay depth and predictable narrative beats prevent it ascending into the highest echelons of the genre’s grace. Regardless, embarking on Adie’s adventure is a calming and welcome experience in spite of its limitations.
