  • Remnant: From the Ashes delivers a challenging but fun action game that will have you coming back for more, especially with friends. Unique worlds and a good progression system make this a fun experience, even though we found the game’s graphical prowess to be a bit lacking. While Dark Souls-like games aren’t for everyone, it is definitely worth checking this one out.

  • Remnant: From The Ashes is a unique take on the Souls-like genre, blending 3rd-person shooting gameplay with the challenging combat of a Dark Souls game. It surprisingly works and offers something new to the endless Souls-like games that are out there. The issue with Remnant: From The Ashes is that if you don’t like Souls-like games, this isn’t the game to change your mind.

  • Overall, Remnant: From The Ashes is a perfect entry point for those who are wanting to take their first steps in dabbling in the soulslike genre. Gunfire Games took me by surprise with this one. I was skeptical going in and doubted the third-person shooter mechanics would blend so seamlessly with the genre. Remnant 2 is due to be released later this year, and frankly, I can’t wait.

  • Maybe this particular version of Remnant: From the Ashes arrived a few years too late, since our attention has been completely shifted towards its upcoming sequel, but as far as Switch ports go, this one is not bad. Sure, compromises are apparent, namely in the visual department and some egregious loading times, but I had a good time with it.

  • Remnant: From the Ashes is still an excellent game. Gunfire Game’s port to the Nintendo Switch has made an exceptionally great game accessible to a whole new group of gamers. Tight, responsive controls and consistently smooth gameplay performance make up for some downgraded visuals. This leaves you with a solid offering for the Nintendo Switch.

  • Overall, the problems stem from the Switch itself, as its lack of ergonomics, fine controls, and aged hardware that made the KOTOR port run poorly as well. The system not only struggled with the combat, but it also struggled to fully load environments, resulting in a lot of pop-in or certain assets not appearing at all.

  • Remnant uses a checkpoint system directly out of the Souls series. You must manually activate it to save or travel and doing so will respawn every enemy in the area that you may have already killed. Death will come often, though at first things weren’t too rough. This game can be enjoyed solo but like most, it is far better in co-op.

  • Swamps of Corsus is a must-buy for fans of Remnant, and a great excuse for curious outsiders to finally check the game out. Remnant: From the Ashes is not the prettiest or most original Soulslike out there, and the lack of an in-game lore depository remains an issue, but it makes up for these quirks by offering the widest variety of modes to engage with. If Remnant: From the Ashes didn’t have enough meat on the bone before, it certainly does now.

  • Remnant: From the Ashes is more than just a Dark Souls clone or a simple third-person shooter. It’s the lovechild of the many games, mixed with aspects of Gears of War, Fallout, The Division, and its own brand of weird. The number of games I’ve kept playing after my time with it for a review can probably be counted on two hands, and I’m happy that Remnant is going to be joining their ranks.

Fans of shooters and challenging games will have a lot of fun here. Sure, the boss fights can get a bit annoying with the minions, the randomly generated areas can get repetitive, and the co-op, while it works well, isn’t perfect, but the world, the action, and the feel of Remnant is really what makes it a great playing game and one I think everyone should give a shot, especially at the price point it is at.
