  • It's an ambitious little game that regrettably tries too hard to grab something out of its reach, but what it does get its hands on is excellent. The combat is spectacular, the atmosphere is charming (prolonged exposure to the soundtrack aside) and while there isn't as much depth to the game's systems as it would like you to believe, they are fun to poke and prod at when you get tired of blasting people with your lasers.

  • All of the pieces are there for this game to be something special, but in the end I just wasn’t feeling it. Fans of the genre would be advised to check it out though. Maybe they’ll see magic in it that I could not.

  • Rebel Galaxy offers an exciting, if streamlined experience of commanding a large spaceship with a heavy focus on combat. It doesn't do much with the story beyond inviting you into its universe, but the gameplay, Western-inspired setting and procedurally generated nature will keep you playing for many hours. The music is also a plus!

  • That's really what Rebel Galaxy is about: not becoming more skilled at combat but simply owning a better ship with deadlier weapons. Earn more, buy more, win more, repeat. It's a grind, yes, but an enjoyable one. Rebel Galaxy doesn't provide much tactical depth or bring anything original to the space genre, but it looks great, and its fun (mostly), arcadey space combat comes at a reasonable price.

  • Overall, Rebel Galaxy is a welcomed newcomer in the family of space games. The physics might not simulate space very well, but I see that as more of a creative liberty taken to make the rest of the mechanics much more enjoyable. The broadside battles between capitol ships make the combat feel epic, and I’m excited to see what more the devs can do either with this game or their next.

  • Rebel Galaxy is a robust trek through the stars, even if it is bogged down by a heavy reliance on repetition and a weak narrative. A host of systems that are all built to generate organic emergent moments, no matter what your play style, make Rebel Galaxy one of this year’s biggest surprises.

  • Rebel Galaxy is nearly perfect in every way. It provides the perfect mix of player choice, balance, and challenge for fans of space combat games who don't mind the lack of 3D flight.

  • Its story has some decent twists and turns, but the whole universe procedurally generates each playthrough. Definitely worth the price of admission. For $20, this one’s a steal. But it really depends on the player, as to whether it’s a wise investment. It’s a solo affair, and one with some real customizability, plus its procedural universe means it’ll really have a lot of reason to play through more than once.

  • With a vast world with a huge amount to do, set in a space western and an outstanding soundtrack to accompany it, Rebel Galaxy has a simple but engaging and visually spectacular combat system. Rebel Galaxy has more than enough to keep you engaged, though best played in small doses.

Rebel Galaxy makes a lot out of a little by giving you the freedom to captain your ship as you please and pursue your own fortune in a region of space loaded with pirates and opportunity. While it's not as deep as it first appears, fun and fast naval-style combat and a vast explorable galaxy made me want to try out each of its different styles of captaining, and kept me happily blasting away.
