- In other words, if you’re considering Railway Empire because you love the sound of a train in the distance, you’re not likely to enjoy the game. This is a management seem that digs deeply into the technology, the business strategy, and the economic acumen required to tame America’s landscape and reach the pinnacle of what this nation’s all about: corporate power.
Kirk Hiner · Jun 23, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I would 100% recommend this to all trains fans and anyone who likes this breed of intense economic sim. A few hiccups minorly hinder it at times, but once you learn your way around the tracks, Railway Empire is a very sound game.
Billy Brown · Jun 19, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Unlike games like Age of Empires in which music provided a sense of context, being as authentic as it could be, Railway Empire has some tunes that sound like they should belong there but somehow come off as anachronical. For example, the music that accompanies landscapes of XIX Century Omaha should not have a drum kit accompanying the mandatory acoustic guitar slides. It just feels a bit incongruent. It is not bad music, though, but it feels a bit out of place.
RON · Feb 18, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Complaining seems a little churlish though, as it’s things that can be easily fixed with a few patches. The core of the game is sound, it just needs to be more upfront with the player about what it’s doing. It’s really frustrating for me because I keep booting it up and I keep playing it, but eventually tangled web of systems gets the better of me and I’ve got to close it in a rage. It pains me because with the easily identified issues to the interface this is a game which would comfortably clamber up to 8.5, perhaps even 9 out of 10.
Jon Sutton · Feb 03, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Railway Empire is a strong but shallow entry into the railway management style of games that has gone long ignored. With a few slight downfalls, primarily as a result of the game only offering limited maps and time periods to operate in, it can go by a little too quick and become repetitive. However, the journey to get to that stage can be enthralling as it offers a high level of tactical thinking as you interlink your network of rails. Strategic purchases of businesses lets you get a leg up over opposition businesses in a race to become the dominant company. Railway Empire is a very good game in its genre, without a shadow of a doubt. It could become a great game, should Gaming Minds Studios open it up that little bit more.
Chris Wray · Feb 01, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Railway Empire comes with a steep learning curve and can often overburden the player with a mammoth selection of tasks. Perseverance is key, because underneath this complexity rests a thoroughly enjoyable experience that’s equally as rewarding as it is satisfying. The game remains in-depth, disparate, and competitive throughout the entirety of play.
Anthony Cole · Jan 27, 2018 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - The game’s tutorial is decent but struggles to explain the complex process of setting up signals, which is a key part of the game and you may find yourself turning to a YouTube video to find out what it actually needs you to do!
Richard Hart · May 23, 2021 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Railway Empire tells a great tale of the Westward Expansion of the US’s railway system. You have to wrestle with some poorly explained and non-intuitive controls in order to get the most out of it, though – but once it’s up and running, this is one of the best train set video games you can get your hands on.
Oliver Roderick · Jun 19, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - In conclusion, if you're looking for a high-octane gaming experience or a pick-up and play title, then dodge this one. However, if you're after an in-depth simulation or you're a massive train fan, then this is a game you should take a further look at choo-choosing. The only things that let it down are the lack of multiplayer, limited customisation options, and a clunky research tree. That said, the more we played, the more fun we had, and that's always a good sign. So, if you want a realistic tycoon game with lots of different modes to play that doesn't punish you for making the game as easy as you want, take a chance on Railway Empire.
Roy Woodhouse · Jan 31, 2018 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - All those caveats aside, Railway Empire is a satisfying enough experience for any strategy fan with even the remotest interest in trains -- or train fans with a passing interest in strategy. It offers campaign and scenarios with tasks and objectives alongside a sandbox mode that allows one to build the network of their dreams, catering to most players. While the lack of a single level going from 1830 to 1930 might displease some, the end product is a capable and accessible title in a very scant genre, and Railway Empire comes off as a passionate -- if not exactly flawless -- title.
