  • For a game so packed with variety and ambition, it's hard to shake the underlying feeling that RAGE actually brings very little to the table. The combat is fantastic, but then so was it in DOOM. There's nothing offensively wrong with RAGE, but sadly it just never comes close to achieving greatness.

  • Rage is a game that once again shows that the programmers at id are truly technical magicians. The visuals and sound are such that they alone make this game worth looking at. In regards to the gameplay, Rage’s overall mechanics are solid, from the control of your character to the driving segments. The only downfall to the gameplay is that the story as a whole is not as strong as other games, but at least there is a story there to enjoy.

  • Though the story gets a bit too cliched, there is a robust amount of adventuring to be done in a world that rewards you for your attentions. Rage is a beautiful game that looks equally stunning with or without the hefty installation (which reduces the load times and is optional on the 360 but required on the PS3), so regardless of which platform you play on, you'll find a rich and rewarding adventure that sets a new visual standard for the postapocalyptic wasteland.

  • RAGE is a perfect example of why we try to stay as uninformed as possible before reviewing a game. We never imagined that the RPG elements would be so vast or deftly handled, resulting in a pleasant surprise. A near-perfect mix of first-person shooting and role-playing, it's a nice fit for those who felt too detached from the gun play in Fallout 3 or Mass Effect. Some may bemoan the lack of competitive multiplayer shooting, but when there are dozens of games on the horizon that do just that, the vehicular approach is the right one.

  • Bad endings can poison your memory of a game. But the fact remains: for ten hours, longer than many entire games, RAGE feels massive, open and beautiful. It's crushing to discover that it's all smoke and mirrors, but while the illusion lasts, it's brilliant.

Beneath the brown, rugged surface there’s real character here – in the lined and weathered faces of NPCs, for instance, or in the way a shaft of sunlight has been angled to hit a pile of artfully aligned rubble just so. It’s an artistry that comes at the cost of environments that react to your bullets in only the most superficial of ways, but nonetheless, the world of Rage shows that id’s artists are capable of much more than gruesome cyber-horror.

  • By no means is RAGE not worth your time -- it looks stunning, the combat on both wheels and foot is fun, and there's a tremendous sense of atmosphere that deserves to be experienced. However, RAGE's quality only makes its lack of ambition more painful in the long run, as it could easily have been better than it is. It's a good game, most definitely, and one that id fans will enjoy ... just don't expect it to do half of what it looks like it can do.

  • RAGE is pretty at times, but it's not enough to paint over the truth - that Id's labor feels like a scaffolding for a game of bolder ideas, ideas which, for whatever reason, aren't realized. And the game that is there just isn't enough to compete with other, better shooters we've seen this year.

  • Rage isn't a complicated game. Despite what the developers might have suggested and we might have assumed, it's still set in a corridor. Fortunately, id still make some of the finest corridors in the world.

  • Yes, Rage is something we have seen before, but it still offers an incredibly complete package. Beyond its intense, action-packed FPS side, the game has a terrific RPG underbelly and features truly enjoyable buggy racing. Fans of these genres, and fans of just about any sub-genre in gaming, will have little to complain about in Rage.
